Arizona has some of the best roads for speeding. With that said Oct 2002 on the way back from Laughlin NV I hit somewhere between 130 and 135 for a short while. I was following another Cobra. Nov 2003 I was coming back from Las Vegas in the Cobra I cruised between 115- 120 for about 15 minutes, the rest of that trip seemed sslloowww. The is a bill in the legislature to raise the speed from 75mph to 85mph.

What I love is the mention of speed...Not what they were actually doing, but what "the speedometer read"........
Folks, I've been to 148mph (certified on radar at Pocono Raceway at the last SAAC convention to darken it's hallways), if you think you can get to that speed on some back country road, your greatly mistaken................

In the mid 60s a buddy and I once left DC for Nags Head, NC (280 miles away)at 5:00am in my 55 Ford Custom with a much-modifed 312. The speedo didn't work, but I kept the throttle on the floor virtually the entire time. Two stops for gas later, when I was passing through Coinjock, NC (about 240 miles down the road), the oil pump shaft found a piece of cork gasket from somewhere or other, one end locked up, and it spun itself into a Twizler shape until it snapped off.
Naturally, my oil pressure light was not hooked up, so I had no indication anything was wrong until the generator light came on, (signaling that the motor was no longer running) and the rear tires stopped rotating. At whatever triple-digit speed we were going, that was truly exciting.
After I wrestled the car to a stop, we both observed a moment of silence. Then my friend looked at his watch and said," Well, I guess it's time for breakfast." It was 7:30.

Back around 1974 carpooling to the local community college about 25 miles from home,riding with a buddy on friday coming home from school,two lane road,staight and flat for 7 miles,decides to "get the cobwebs out of the carb",1969 Mustang Mach I,351-C,highly modified,doing around 60,drops it in third (toploader),nails it,shifts to forth around 6500rpms,holds it to the floor,looks over to me as says "watch this",starts moving the steering wheel back and forth 1/4 turn each way,cars stays straight,front wheels were barely touching the road,speedometer not connected,I have since calculated we were doing somewhere around 135mph.... When he finally slowed down,I told him I would find another carpool to ride with on fridays.....
I have hit around 120mph in my Mustang on a couple of occasions on deserted roads,do not do it anymore........
Have hit 125mph on a couple of race tracks doing open track events,now I keep my high speed jaunts strictly to race tracks,knowing I can do it is enough for me on the street........

I've been up around 120 in/on several vehicles (Cobra, bikes, a friend's 1961 Chrysler which just seemed to have almost no limit) but that's about it. I took a friend (whose mother had a GT350, back in the late '60's or early '70's, incidentally) for a ride in the Cobra and, as we pulled onto a deserted stretch of Interstate, I went up through the gears. When he said, "OK, OK, That's enough", I glanced down and the speedo was right around 120, +/- a little. I've run as fast as 116 on the drag strip, which doesn't feel nearly as fast, probably because I was wearing a helmet, but I've never looked at the speedo at the end of the quarter. Really, I think it's a lot more fun to go 70-80; any more than that and the wind gets so bad but then at 6'6" I stick WAY up out of the car!

I guess I forgot that it is completely impossible for anybody else on this site to do anything better/faster than you, so I won't take too much offense to the fact that you are calling most of our posts bull$hit.
For the record, my 140+ run was done on a fairly new section of 4-lane interstate, with extremely light traffic. That being said, your definition of "back country roads" in New Jersey is completely different that what we have in Missouri and Kansas. I think maybe you've seen one too many episodes of The Dukes of Hazzard. I've seen faster runs than mine go down on sections of open rural two-lane here that are straight and flat for miles at a time.
Could my speedo be off? Possibly. But I know what fast feels like. I've ridden with SAAC co-director Ken Eber in his original 427 S/C at Pocono in excess of 170 (which is just one of many high-speed excursions I've experienced in my 32 years of life), so I feel my seat of the pants judgement in pretty good.
Now I'll let you get back to reigning over all of us "rookies".

I know for a fact that Johan did a sustained 140-150 in a Ferrari 328 for 2 hours 37 minutes driving from Hilton Head to Atlanta in the early morning Hours of July 3rd , 2001, in order to beat Willis' arrival by 19 minutes. He had his flashers on and a note from a State Patrol Major in his pocket.

Coming home east bound on Rte. 80 in my Corvette in the early afternoon,not a soul around so I just floored it to see how fast it would go. Got to 135 and still had more but it started to rain so I backed out of the gas,and was coasting down when an Omni GLH
passed me at about 120 mph. I'll bet that guy was in seventh heaven thinking he had blown off a Vette. For a moment I considered going after him but then I thought anyone who would drive that car that fast in the rain probably wasn't playing with a full deck and I slowed down. Good thing too, for about a mile down the road the sky opened up and I couldn't see more than 10 feet in front of me. Haven't had the Cobra out on the road yet
but I doubt it will ever see more than 100 mph , yeah right!!

Regardless of what Pat Buckley has to say about me, the facts of life are the facts. If you rely on the factory speedometer for your adventures, you'll be sad to know that they are only calibrated up to 55mph for the older cars, and 65mph for the semi newer ones. Speed is a tough item to judge, especially when your driving. That was my whole point....Now, as for being the fastest or the best, I not once have ever stated that. Here, or anywhere else for that matter. If you have a bug up your ass (as Pat seems to have for me for some strange reason), so be it. But let's get things straight about it now and be done with it.

In my case, I was driving the Cobra early on a Sunday morning and there was NO traffic anywhere on the hiway around me. I was doing around 120 mph when I was "shock and awed" that there was virtually no wind that morning. I said "what the _uck" and just "put the pedal to the medal" and "held on". Since I was doing over 120 mph already, I reached this open strech of hiway and knew there was NO traffic anywhere ahead of me, so I "went for it". I was expecting to hit some sort of "wall" around 150 - 160 but the car was pretty smoothe. My balls only ran out after I glanced down and saw the SPEEDO going past 176 mph. There was plenty of RPM left, however I had had enough.
As Mr. Dickey has said, there are several long stretches of open hiway in the Kansas City area and if you are already doing 120+ mph and there is a 3 - 5 mile open stretch of flat hiway in front, some pretty crazed speeds can be reached.
Mr. Mustang:
I think the reason MOST people on this forum purchased high horsepower light Cobra's were because they don't have to "make _hit up".

It has nothing to do with making it up, it has to do with what is, and what is not true speeds that the car was going. At 148mph, the front end of my race prepped Mustang got so light that it was unsafe to attempt to go any faster. This was a modern day car, with a 12 point cage, full race suspenion, and 400 rear wheel horsepower on a race track built for such speeds. To say that an older car with a stock suspension on regular roads could handle those same speeds is ludicrous and laughable at best........
I'm just pointing out the reality of it all as someone who has been out there....

The only "bug up my ass" is that you always seem to assume that you are the only one "who has been out there". You don't know many of us on this site, including me, so you have no idea what my racing background is. Yet you assume that you are the only one with this type of experience.
I'm not "personally attacking" you, just trying to get you to see that you're being a bit arrogant in your assumptions. That's the type of attitude that brings this site down...

Your correct, but I did not question anyone personally, only in general.However, it seems to have hit home with quite a few people (on and off the forum) Let me ask you, have you ever been on a track, on a long straightaway and had your speed clocked on radar? If so, then I know you'll understand what I'm talking about when going over 120mph. Finally, as for my arrogance, it comes across as such, but it is my own personal writing style. if you come out to the spring fling this year, I'll be more than happy to sit down with you and discuss this face to face. According to several magazines my 5 speed 2000 SVT Contour can do a CLOCKED speed of 153 MPH, yet however according to you a 520 c.i 5 speed 2000 Superformance Cobra can't do 170 MPH? Most people in this thread stated "the speedo read" a certain MPH. I will have to tell the Olthoffs next time I see them that there "old" Superformance Cobra can't do over 140 MPH.
As I stated in my post, there was NO wind that morning and I was in a area were there are hills on both sides of the hiway. I quess there is some "magical" traction on a race track that glues the cars to the ground and stops the wind.
Most on this forum are aware of speedo's being off at higher speeds, several Hayabusa's have been clocked in the 190's when there speedo said around 220 MPH.

This is why insist on a iron block over aluminum. Keeps the nose down longer and provides effective steering at indicated speed of 171. Calibrated to 168.7.
As for race cars not achieving some of the speeds others are in civilian attire. The rollbars, decals video cameras helmets and other racing gear has a tendecy to create aerodynamic spoil. Take that stuff off, the car will go faster.
Skinny street tires inflated for burn outs will provide less rolling resistance also.
