My family and I.......Especially now that there is wireless in the house and the laptop is sitting on the livingroom (kids have invaded the familyroom again) table as I type this out. Tough room tonight.

Bill,
Although I have not driven on the highways at anything approcaching the speeds listed in this post, ( My car won't even go that fast), I do disagree with you on the speedometers not being accurate. I have had mine tested by the CHP with their radar at 50,60,70,80,90, and 100 MPH. It and the tach were exactly on with the readouts in the test equipment. However, not being to much into authenticity for the car I use a VDO electronic set of gauges and the speedometer has a computer chip that is programmed to match. Really works great when changing tire sizes or gears. All I have to do it push a button, start the car, drive a mile and the computer chip will calibrate the speedometer for the new gears or tire size.
Owner of the slowest Cobra on the club.

Well if I have to admit ---
386 mph in a 1970 Dodge Dart with the Deacon's and Mayor's daughters in the back seat getting ready for the date..........
It was difficult to keep my eye on the old back country curvy hilly road, the speedometer (which had recently been calibrated to 295) and the rear view mirror watching the young ladies get ready.
If I remember that Dart had a good straight 6 with about 50,000 miles.

Picture it...
It's 1969, 2AM, US 99 (now I-5) headed back north to Bakersfield from a football game in Long Beach.
I'm 18 years old and the gal in the front seat is gonna catch hell when I drop her off. (Lights off, rolling stop)
Beer in a cooler in the back seat.
Colt .45 under the front seat.
Red lights and siren, CHP.
They clocked my '62 Oldsmobile at 103. (The CHP double-teamed back then)
They took pity on me and wrote me up for 83 in a 70 zone to keep me out of instant jail time.
Second trooper was 'way cool, flashlighted the beer cooler but decided not to look inside.
They drove big old Dodge 440 Magnum wedge-heads back then... They blew theirs up trying to catch me. Had to call in for a tow.
When I think about running that fast for that long on those old bias-ply nylon tires... my hair turns even whiter.
Ticket cost me over $100... a chunk of money in 1969.
What a moron.
When my BDR gets here... I ain't goin' there.
Well, probably not.

SHOOT - - - I WASN'T GOIN' TO ADMIT NOTHIN' - - -BUT Y'ALL FINALLY GOT TO ME.
ABOUT FIFTEEN MONTHS AGO "SEVEN" COBRAS FROM CACC (CAPITRAL AREA COBRA CLUB) WERE HEADING EAST TOWARDS A CERTAIN CITY IN SOUTHERN OHIO ON AN INTERSTATE - - AND - - WELL - - ONE THING LED TO ANOTHER AND EVENTUALLY TO "LEAPFROG". THERE WAS SURPRISINGLY LITTLE TRAFFIC FOR THAT TIME OF DAY (LATE AFTERNOON) EXCEPT FOR SEVERAL 18 WHEELERS WHO THOUGHT THAT THEY WERE HAVING A RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE.
WHEN THE DUST SETTLED AT THE HOTEL A LITTLE LATER AND EVERYONE HAD HAD A "PULL OR TWO" ON THE RAKI BOTTLE AND NOTES WERE COMPARED THE "SPEEDOMETER" READINGS HAD ALL BEEN BETWEEN 125 AND 135 AT THE TOP OF THE ARC.
NO - - WE DIDN'T HAVE GPS, NOR HAD WE RADAR, NOR WERE THERE ANY POLICE FOLLOWING US (THANK YOU, JESUS) - BUT I DO HAVE SIX OTHER WITNESSES - EACH TO OUR OWN "SPEEDOMETER" READING.
WHEN I BOUGHT MY GT-40 A FEW YEARS AGO - I MADE IT A POINT TO PICK IT UP IN NEW JERSEY ON THE DAY AFTER THANKSGIVING - - ALMOST NO TRAFFIC ON THE JERSEY TURNPIKE. I WAS CRUISING AT WHAT I THOUGHT WAS ABOUT 85 TO 90 (SORT OF). WHEN I FOUND THE SPEEDOMETER - IT WAS LOCATED ON THE FAR SIDE OF THE INSTRUMENT PANEL - BARELY WITHIN MY VISUAL CAPABILITIES - IT WAS APPROACHING 130 MPH. STARTLED - I BACKED OFF AND LOOKED AROUND GUILTILY. (LOOKING "AROUND" IN A GT-40 IS A SERIOUS OVERSTATEMENT OF CAPABILITIES). AT ANY RATE A FEW MILES FARTHER ALONG I WAS ON A STRETCH OF THE J. TURNPIKE THAT, IN ADDITION TO BEING VACANT, WAS MAKING A VERY LONG, GRADUAL, SWEEPING LEFT TURN. THE CAR FELT GREAT AND SEVERAL HOURS OF CONVERSATION WITH THE BUILDER GAVE ME A LOT OF CONFIDENCE IN THE CAR - - - I FLOORED THAT SUCKER. THE "SPEEDOMETER" NUMBERS ONLY GO TO 160 MPH BUT THE GT WAS DOING EVERY BIT OF THAT AND A LITTLE MORE. WHAT REALLY SURPRISED ME WAS THAT THE GT WASN'T STRAINING AT ALL AND SEEMED TO HAVE PLENTY MORE WHERE THAT CAME FROM. (I DIDN'T). THANKS FOR BUILDING A GREAT CAR, GARY.
NOW, IN THE ABOVE INSTANCES YOU WILL PLEASE NOTE THAT I, AT ALL TIMES, REFERRED TO MY "SPEEDOMETER". HOW FAST WAS I REALLY GOING?? DON'T REALLY KNOW - - DON'T REALLY CARE, EITHER. IT WAS FUN. (STUPID - - BUT FUN).
AND - - FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT LIKE (TRUST) MY SPEEDOMETER (OR ME) PLEASE OBSERVE THE MISTLETOE PINNED TO MY COAT TAIL.
I "AIN'T" EVEN GOIN' TO DISCUSS AN OLD LINCOLN FOUR DOOR SEDAN ON BEAUTIFULLY PAVED ROADS (THEY'RE ALL BACK ROADS" THERE) IN THE SULTANATE OF OMAN.
AND, BILL. I SEE YOU'VE BEEN TAKING YOUR "EVAN PILLS" REGULARLY. GOOD BOY!!!!
Y'ALL HAVE A REALLY GREAT (AND SAFE, DAMMIT) DAY.

Jack - somehow I KNEW you would eventually come in on this thread and be a bad boy. All is right with the world now.
The only thing would make it better is if'n you had an archbishops' daughter in the passenger seat at the time. (underage of course).

huh?!?
no cobra or vette stories to swap, however been on the back of a Honda 600 CBR (not driving mind you) passing traffic at 90+ with flops, helmut, tee and shorts--plenty scary in my mind., especially when you can feel the tires loose grip as we went over the center stripes. thought for sure I was a grease stain.
Raced a buddy on I-95 late, late, late night....he skunked me as
my little 328i is governed. Weird, when what I assume was the fuel pump cut out at 123 or 132-->couldn't tell you too focused on the road...weird when the car goes 'silent'.
Been 140+ with a buddy in his 911 in the phosphate lands of Florida and over the 140 mark in a friends Merc 500 SL (kinda relaxing actually and no, not driving). I have a perverse fascination with 175.
for ridiculous on-street speeds see racingflix.com --lots of video footage of many makes and models in the street, road, drag strip etc.
regards
jon
