I have had my Cobra up to 190 mph at an airbase here during a days racing. We used to have access to the Ohakea airbase for racing, but unfortunately the defense force have stopped the access.

The Cobra has a 3:1 diff. 1:1 top gear, 17 inch wheels, and I cant remember the revs now, but it was sitting on the rev-limiter for about a third of the straight. I dont have a working speedo, so had to rely on mathematics to calculate it - but it was just over 190mph.

I decided to make a flat-bottom for the car, and an air-damn. The car already had an aeroscreen and a closed in passengers side. Unfortunately tho - this was when we lost access to the airbase - so I never got to go back and top the 200mph mark (probably just as well, as the Cobra may have turned into an aeroplane!).

Although not quite so hairy as the road stories, I was racing against all sorts of cars, and there were about 30 or 40 in the race. Some of the cars (Mini Coopers) were only reaching around 110mph, so there was a vast speed difference, and doing a 190mph slalom around them was pretty exciting! The spin at 100mph or so off down a runway at one point was pretty scary as well (and didnt do great things for tyre wear).

Now I am married with kids - and the car doesnt get used so much, but gee it was fun!

To Mr Mustang - a Cobra with full race 454 eats 140mph for breakfast!

Anything over 150 on public highways is just plain irresponsible. It has to stop!!

WILF, J WHEATON,

WHAT PART OF "I AIN'T EVEN GOIN' TO DISCUSS" ESCAPES YOU??? HEH, HEH, HEH.

THERE WERE "PASSENGERS" IN THE CAR. LET'S SAY TWO MATCHED PAIRS. WE WERE IN TOWN (DRINKING THE UNDRINKABLE) WHEN THE "ALERT" CALL CAME. I DON'T HAVE ANY IDEA HOW FAST WE WERE GOING - - IT WAS AS FAST AS A LINCOLN 4 DOOR HAD EVER GONE BEFORE.

OUR PROBLEM WAS "WHAT TO DO" WITH THE TWO YOUNGER PASSENGERS AND THE "BORROWED" LINCOLN (WE WERE GOING TO RETURN IT LATER - HONEST) AFTER WE GOT BACK TO THE BASE.

THE YOUNG LADIES WERE THERE BECAUSE MY WING - YEAH, I'M PRETTY SURE IT WAS HIM - HAD PROMISED, EARLIER, THAT WE WOULD TAKE THEM FOR A RIDE IN AN F-102. THIS WOULD POSE AN INTERESTING CHALLENGE BECAUSE WE DIDN'T HAVE ANY TF-102'S (TWO SEATERS). THE CONCERN HERE WAS THAT IF THEY WANTED TO FLY - WHILE SITTING ON OUR LAPS - WHICH "STICK" WOULD THEY "STEER" WITH.

FORTUNATELY (??) WE WERE SAVED FROM OURSELVES BY A CONTNGENT OF BRIT SECURITY FOLKS. (PROBABLY SOME OF WILF'S RELATIVES) WHO RAN US DOWN AND CORNERED US BETWEEN THE BOQ AND THE HANGAR ROW. THEY RELIEVED US OF ANY FURTHER NEED FOR CONCERN ABOUT THE YOUNG LADIES OR THE CONSULATE'S LINCOLN LIMO.

THEY DID, HOWEVER, FORWARD A SCATHING INDICTMENT - INCREDIBLY EMBELISHED - (GAWD - THOSE BRITS CAN WRITE CREATIVELY - I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT HALF OF THOSE WORDS MEANT) TO OUR SQUADRON COMMANDER.

THE ONLY THING THAT REALLY SAVED OUR A$$ES WAS THAT, UNBEKNOWNCED TO THEM - AT THE TIME - I WAS THE SQUADRON COMMANDER. SETTING A PROPER EXAMPLE FOR ONES YOUNGER PILOTS IS AN ESSENTIAL ELEMENT OF LEADERSHIP.

Y'ALL HAVE A REALLY GREAT DAY.

BLACKJACK - 21 - OUT

I have absolutely nothing to confess. NOTHING. For those of you with me at the Lube last night please have the common courtesy to just keep your traps shut.

I have a secret location in CA for high-speed runs --- several miles long, straight, and visibility for 100 yards on either side of the road, with no entrances to the roadway.

I was passing through there with a cute twenty-something blond chatting away in the seat next to me in my Porsche while on a first date. I got to my secret location, looked at the blondie sitting nex t to me and thought, "Eh, why not?"

I closed the sunroof and rolled up the windows, then I put my foot into it slowly, so she wouldn't freak out. We passed 100 mph and there was no reaction --- she just kept on talking. So, I let it keep going up. 115, 120, 125, 130, 135... I didn't hear a word she said as I watched the speedometer climb.

I took my foot out of it to start slowing down, and without looking over said, "That was 135."

The talking stopped. She looked out the window and back over to the speedometer as it dropped down past 105 mph.

Once back to highway speeds, the conversaton started up again.

We had a nice time after that on our date. I lost track of her though. She was cute, but man, she just talked too damn much.

Gear calculated 135 on a beautiful stretch of back road recently paved, see for miles....last weekend. Had to grab 5th, there was more to go. Wasn't sure before. But now I want to try more some day.

Maybe I can build myself a crash proof suit first....... Yikes!

Hmmm...The last speeding ticket I received in Laguna Canyon comes to mind...Just slipped into fifth gear and saw the radar gun and cop next to his motorcycle. I immediatly dropped off the gas and began to coast down to a reasonable speed as he clamered to get on his bike. 127 in a 50 mph zone. I never got to use fifth gear. He was so impressed when he had me lift the hood, he let me off with "exceeding the state max". DAMN I MISS THAT CAR!!!!
