Just the opposite
I had something similar happen with Stewart Transport, but the end result has been much different. They picked up a car I bought from a guy in Maryland and shipped it to me in Texas. Price was reasonable. Somewhere along the way they managed to scrape up the front end of the car. As soon as I noticed it, I pointed the damage out to the driver, and he said he'd tell Collin (the owner) about it, and that I should snap some pictures and send them to Collin. He told me that he'd only seen two other incidents in the previous two years of working with Stewart, and each time Collin just cut the owners a check. So, I sent Collin the pictures and called him. He told me to get a quote and he would cut me a check. I got a quote (which ended up being almost as much as the cost to ship it), faxed it to him, and about a week later I had a check in my hand.
My personal feeling is that Stewart Transport is a great company. Every time I spoke with Collin he was very helpful, and was always trying to do what he could to make me happy. I would say, however, that I wouldn't use them again for shipping a completed car. Their trucks are designed for carrying kits, and they do a great job of it. They are not, however, really setup for delivering completed cars. In order to carry the car, you have to have a flatbed tow truck show up at each end of the trip to get the car in and out of the truck. Companies like Intercity use trucks that have a lift built onto the back, so that it's a very simple procedure to get a car in and out.
I'm not sure what's going on with your situation, but I never experienced anything like what you described.
