Default Augusta International Raceway Memorial Dedication

Thought the viewers might be interested in the Cobra photos that have been "lost" for forty years. The #15 Ken Miles Cobra and the #16 Dave MacDonald Cobra sitting in the garage at the Augusta International Raceway in March 1964.

Ken would win the USRRC Manufacturers' Championship race and Dave would win the USRRC Drivers' Championship race that weekend in his King Cobra.

Dave would loose his life a few weeks later at Indy and Ken a few years later at Riverside.

A monument will be placed next to the former pit lane, just a few feet from where the photos were taken, with a dedication on September 11, 2004. Here is a link to the pictures and please take a minute to tour the rest of the site:

Thanks and Good Racing,
Henry

Are we going to have a display of cars that raced (or at least replicas of them?)

John, we are "working" this now. Am waiting to hear back from several people to see if some of the former cars are still with us.

Does anyone have any knowledge if the Ken Miles and Dave MacDonald Cobras are in someones "collection"?

Two drivers of the events at the road course (NASCAR and USRRC) have confirmed they will attend the dedication.

Have you had an opportunity to get out to Diamond Lakes Regional Park? We are planning to walk the track again on May 8th and also help the Park with some "trash" clean-up. You are more than welcome to join us.

I drove my truck around the accessible parts of the track one day when I was bored (luckily I didn't get arrested). It makes me sad to go out there. It seems that when Augusta has an opportunity to capitalize on something it never does.

Didn't mean to go all political on you.

John, not a problem.

When I stood for the first time where the Cobras of Ken and Dave were parked in the garage (the foundation is still in place), it was a very emotional moment.

It is an experience to still be able to walk this special place. Glenn "Fireball" Roberts won his last race at this track. And, six of the seven top finishers in the NASCAR "Augusta 510" run on November 17, 1963 were lost before the next racing season: "Fireball" Roberts, Joe Weatherly, Dave MacDonald, Jimmy Pardue, Billy Wade and Larry Thomas. The seventh driver was Ned Jarrett.

Sorry to get off the subject a bit. I have more photos of Cobras at the track that will go up over the next few days.
