Default What tranny to use

I will be getting my Backdraft cobra replica at the end of June. Yesterday several people gave me their opinion on engine size- thanks! Can anyone please help me with information about transmissions?

My dealer is telling me that a T5 will work just fine with my 400HP motor and shifts much nicer than a Tremec (which would cost me about $1,800 more).

Any help would be much appreciated.

Jim

I'm using a tremec TKO in my BDR. 5th gear is only useful from about 60 mph up. I have no complaints on the way it shifts. I think the $1800. sounds wrong as I only paid $1,075. for my trans.

echo davidlee... total price of a brand new tremec shouldn't be more than even 1500 at the top end.

is your guy paying you to take the t5? T-5's blew up all the time in mustangs racing, hence the Tremec 3550.

Don't waste your time with the T-5. My tremec shifts like a dream.

JCS,

The TKO is excellent, although it will take a few K miles to loosen up. The TKO jump from 4th to 5th is big for a small block - the TKO-II has a .82 5th vs. .68 for the TKO. Either has more than enough torque capacity, so does the T-5.

I have a 3.54 diff, with a TKO, there is a spot between 60 and 70 that is awkward because of the 4-5 gear spacing. For crusing it revs a little to much for 4th, grunts a little to much for 5th. Solution: cruise at 70.

I'm running a FMS 351/360hp crate engine. It seems to be plenty quick for me.

Jim;
Check out the June issue of "5.0 Mustang & Super Fords". It has the spec's on the new TKO that I think will solve a lot of problems for our community, including mine. I'm building a Dart-based 427W stroker that will make about 550 hp and I've been agonizing over my transmission choice for months.
