Default Air Flow???

I'm going with the oval cobra air cleaner cover. I'm hoping the 1.8" will fit, I know the 3" doesn't with out modification. My concern is the amount of air flow. I contacted K&N, they said the filter, E-1960, flows 465 CFM. The carb will be in the 750 range. The 465 sure sounds low. Thoughts???

Thanks

I just went to the E-1963(3"), it fit just fine and boy did it make a difference. With the way my engine sets in my chassis and with the 351W, Performer intake/carb and Duraspark distributor, I have about 1/2" clearance between my hood and the top of the oval air cleaner. I would like to say I designed it that way, but I didn't as I bought my car with the drivetrain already in place. Depending on your intake setup and which distributor you're using, you could fabricate/modify your existing pan base to drop it down like a cap over the carb. My motto is where there's a will, there's usually a way. Hope it helps.

I use the shallow height filter on my 408W with oval air cleaner, and it works just fine.

On the dyno, it made no difference on or off.

Remember that 427SOs had that single stelling 8" dia filter, and they didn't exactly hang around either? I believe someone on CC actually checked the effect of that particular filter on his 427, brought total power down by 5HP from memory.

I am not doing the formula, just guesing, but IMHO your 406 needs at least another 200cfm for overall best top end power in the 5900-6200 range.
You may not notice it as may seem just fine.
But add the cfm with an oval drop base or other solution and I bet your motor's power increase will be very noticeable above 5000rpm.

Like I posted, going from the standard 1.8"tall paper filter to the 3" K&N (E-1963) made a world of a difference for mine and I'm only running a .030"over non-stroked 351W. You probably wouldn't convince me that you could have too much filter, so if you can fit the 3" or the 6" (E-1966) do it. Although to realistically use the 6" oval filter, you'd probably have a superhuge-stroked-bored-blown-mega inch motor that you wouldn't want to stand too close to otherwise you might get sucked in.

Does any have/know if they make a drop base for the oval cobra cover, to get the 3" to fit? As it sits now, it won't with the Victor Jr intake.

Thanks
