Hmmm.... Really good point.
But I look at it this way. Earlier in the thread, someone made the point that we're (by we, I mean those who believe in this point) not trying to make the cars impossible to steal. Just make it harder than the next one.
Sure, someone could pull off one of my spark plug wires and use it as a coil wire... except well, my spark plug wires take about 10 minutes to take off at a minimum...unless you cut them and reterminate them. Some thief...
I guess if I really wanted to make it impossible, I would remove the carb...??
I just prefer to be at events with people I can trust, and say "If someone is determined enough, they're going to get my car. But I'd rather enjoy myself than spending an hour setting up my security devices."
Maybe I could park my car near water and employ "Sharks with frickin' laser beams on their heads...."

Rick
I think J.P. said what we all have known since one caveman got something another caveman wanted...somebody wants it, they're gonna get it.
All we can do is slow them down.

SB,
Interesting hub. Since it has no pin, how does it release?

Coil wire is different.
For me anyway, the coil wire has a different end on the coil side than the plug wires. With the Jacobs anti theft and the club on the wheel to slow them down. It keeps the kid that want's to go for a joyride from having an easy target. Other than towing your own shipping container, someone who really wants it will get it. I have heard of stories of guys using a rollback at the mall in broad daylight to take cars. That's why we have insurance.

Jamo Guys Jamo car is nice and I was just playing with him. A cable through the front to rear wheels will stop 99% of thiefing. Vice grips work great for car with removeable steering wheels. Most cars have normal plug wires and pulling one from a plug will work on as a coil wire 95% of the time. The place I worked the truck was taken once a week for joy rides, Problem was fixed when a coil and wire where hooked to the seat frame. It was separated from the body of the truck. Key on 40,000 volts in your butt. Truck was OK after that. You could kill someone with an MSD system, and get sued for it to. Lo-jac wins my vote overall. At least you will get your car back within 24 hours or they pay. Rick Lake

I felt the discharge of the Jacobs system after it went through my friend, through the car and on to me to be grounded by the lift. Was NOT fun. Now I know what to do with my extra coil. Cool.

Brent,
Naw, connect it to a sparkplug in the exhaust pipe. Cool flames!

I was thinking some cool green neon lights would look really good in the big ole side pipes. I'll put the coil on the passenger side seat.

Bottom line is, a lock keeps a honest guy honest. There's a lot of ways to slow a thief down (as we've learned through everyone's post) and hopefully most of us won't have to experience this. I really don't want to go to jail for dislocating some bastoids elbow, but if I catch them, "wax on wax off".

Have you seen that commercial on TV where the fellow has a car cover that makes his car look like a beater? Great commercial but I can't remember the company or the product they were advertising!

My Cobra is coming around the final bend and I just thought I would let you guys know what I'm doing to prevent theft. I have been working at a car stereo and alarm shop for a couple of years and I hope that I can sleep well when I get to a hotel room for the night. Anyways, Clifford makes a couple of alarms called the Clifford 7000, 8000, and 9000 which have been replaced by the 701, 801, and the 901 I believe. They have a proximity sensor which I plan to put under the carpet on the transsmission hump. It is pretty flat. You can adjust it so that if somebody is a little too close for comfort it will send out a warning chirp which you will be able to hear if you are parked close enough. And the second stage in which if somebody has come way too close to your cobra (not just to take a look) the alarm will sound which in turn is your cue to wake up go outside and open a can of wupass. Now these alarms are set up to also do starter and ignition kill. If the alarm goes off the only thing way to start the car is a secret code made by you, disarming the alarm with the clicker and using the key to start it or rewiring the entire starter and ignition circuit. Notice how they can't just stick a screwdriver in the ignition. Just a warning if you guys plan on taking some of this into consideration make sure that you go to a well recognized stereo shop and alarm shop. I have seen some of the work from good guys and circuit city and they just don't do it for me. Go through a higher end shop who is familiar with doing custom work. So to be honest even with the security system I will still cover it and pull the coil wire and use the battery disconect but I like the idea of a warning and maybe catching the guy and beating the ever living sh$% out of him.

Here in Alaska just about everyone uses a command start to preheat their vehicles. The better ones offer a two way transmission. The key fob on the two way system (Compu-Star) has a picture of a car(that is animated) and an audible signal to let you know that your vehicle has started. A feature of this system is that it can be programmed to incorporate an alarm. It has a range of over a quarter of a mile. If anyone tampers with your vehicle it will signal you via the audible tone and visual animation in the key fob. You can be breathing down the neck of the culprit before he knows it. These systems are not cheap, you will pay over a thousand dollars with the command start and all the features.

The first nite at Truckey Ca I parked under my room window ,stayed up untill everything setteled down and worried. The second nite ar Roseburg Or we made freinds with a bunch with motorcycles and an enclosed trailer. When the Holiday Inn was full with a high school reunion we told them about the Hotel 6 and up the road we all went. They parked their rig to protect mine out in the open lot and helped me cover mine.

arctic snake has a good point. the two way feature is great. some of the pros and cons to that are that they don't make a two way pager alarm that is safe or legal to install on a stick shift. I can't wait until they do. Also most if not all of the two way paging alarms have a shock sensor which means that until they have made contact with the car it will not warn or trigger. You can add a proximity sensor to the these alarms but they are typically bulky and as we all know there is no room in a cobra for extra bulk. he has a great point, the alarm will send you a message and tell you exactly what part of the car has been tampered with amongst many other things like the temperature in your car and some other cool stuff. the clifford product although it doesn't have the two way feature is the only alarm that is legal and safe to install on a stick shift. It is simple. when you get out of the car you press a button on the clicker to activate the remote start while it is in nuetral. you get out of the car, arm it and it will automatically shut the car off upon arming. all zones on the alarm are secured and the car remains in nuetral. when you press the button to remote start the car later unless it has been tampered with it will start. if any sensors have gone off it will not remote start. that way nobody can put the car in gear while you are not around. and to top it all off you guys with carbureators would have to have a perfectly tuned motor that doesn't require the pushing of the gas pedal to start it or you would have to add an actuator to the throttle. also these alarms in california with two way or remote start run about $400 to $600 installed.

The command start feature isn't really needed or even desired on a Cobra. There is no air conditioning or heater (on mine at least)to warrant a pre start. The paging alarm feature is of value however. I simply mentioned the command start feature to introduce the alarm aspect of this system. It can be used to pre-cool/warm your daily driver, lock the doors, turn on the interior/courtesy lights, open the trunk, sound the horn or activate an alarm. This same key fob can be used to activate a seperate system ie: A Cobra alarm. I believe you can use this on a manuel transmission provided that you have a neutral lock out as found on Tremecs. Obviously a system like this is not for everyone.

to prevent the car from being towed or driven, a cheap and effective solution is a valve in the brake pipes. Push the pedal, close the valve, and the only way to move the car is to lift it up.
