Computer Problem, HELP
Gents:
I have some kind of virus/idiot in my computer. I have www.excite.com loaded in as my home page (mostly for news mind you--I guess I could get a little more conservative and have fox or drudge as my home page...)
I digress,
Anyway, every so often another home page self loads into my internet exploder properties and when I click on IE that new, unwelcome page pops up. I am really getting tired of having to change it back in the properties every day.
Any ideas?
I have the LATEST Norton and I run it all the time...but it never seems to catch a virus or even say I have one.
HELP!!!
I hate these idiots!
David

You have a piece of spyware on your machine. go get an anti-spyware program off google. They all work. The trial versions are fine (free) you will trip when you see all the stuff you collect online.
I run mine about once a week. It works great.

David,
It is possible you have some data mining probes lurking on your PC. If you don't already have software, try Adware 6.0; its free. Save it, run it, and reboot your PC regardless. Some of these things get in to your registry. Run it every couple of days. You'll be amazed at how much stuff you probably have on your PC now. Good Luck. Duane

David,
Sadly, I am busy trying to rid my own machine of pop-up malware that a certain gentleman from NY (hey you NY folks can't have it both ways) has now convinced me to buy malware protector for. I am still scraping for the coinage. Will let you know when all is well. The one I got is not a free ride to dispose of.

You also should reset your IE settings. Go up to tools in the task bar above the url link. click tools, internet options hit the programs tab. Three quarters of the way down there is a button to "Reset web settings" hit that. You should be fine, but do get the spyware program too.

David, I had this happen one time a while back. Pissed me off.
Here's what I did, but use much caution here.
start
run
regedit
search for the http://www.whateverthestupidasssitenameis.com
change the reference to your favorite
hit f3 to search for the next entry
change the reference to your favorite
repeat until that damn address is gone. I ran my anti spyware tool, but it didn't find anything...My default page was changed to some obscure search engine but changed it back to Club Cobra...

David. What windows are you running? XP, 2000, 98se, etc...?
Are you using any kind of file sharing program: Kazaa, Imesh, Morpheus, etc...
Also, when you open your IE browser, and it goes to a page different than your orginal homepage, what does the address bar have in it? Is it a really long address with lots of % and & in it?
If you get me this info, I can help you out. Sometimes you migh not even need spyware killing programs, you just have to know the windows directory.
Acendo...

That's a Browser Hijack....easily fixed with the right tools.
(...isn't that true with just about anything?)

Do not forget to clear your history and cookies as well as run anti spyware. As someone else said Spybot works very well and is free. I do not like adware 6.0 as it seems to put it's own spyware in the system.

Brent, I would be very careful with the regedit program. This is the program that exposes all of you registry settings, and it is very sensitive. One small screwup and your reinstalling the operating system.
If you do what Brent suggests, make sure you dont change anything else but the webpage and dont remove hyphens, parenthesis, or spaces. Document everything you do so you can change it back if need be.
Ad-aware first...registry last resort.

Unless you are very familiar and comfortable editing the registry,STAY OUT OF IT !!!! . As Bluerooster said, it is sensitive and if you unwittingly delete something, you will probably have to reinstall your operating system. Do a google search for SpyBot and/or Ad Aware. They both will remove that invasive software. After it is gone, go to "tools" in your browser (IE) then "Internet Options" and type in the address of your home page.

At our office we have been running etrust antivirus software kicked norton's to the curb. Have not had a problem with a virus getting onto our computer's or network. Have run into a few problems printing things when virus is active but easily fixed. I have heard from people more knowledgeable than myself that norton's is not the best out there anymore... believe me I had used norton's for years but repected their advice . Just something to check into. Try working without your computer just for a day and see how productive you are. Jumping in one of your cars and taking the day off is not an option Point is that we have become so dependant on these things that you are constantly tweaking them to get the most out of them (and keep them working) to make you more profitable. And what a pain it is when something goes wrong. We use adaware 6.0 here at work and have not had anything like that happen. Should be able to download a free version somewhere. Hope this helps.

Sorry I didn't respond last night...I had a date with errrr...Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Hey, at least it is a car movie!

Yes, it is a whole bunch of %%%%%%%% in the properties. What a bunch of idiots would do this? Do they really think if they hijack my home page that I would even stop a nanosecond to read their home page? What a bunch of idiots.

David,
All the answers above are very good, but there is one thing more that you can do with the registry. Once you get everything like you wnat it, do an export full registry and either put the file on another hard drive, CD, or DVD. That way you have a full backup of your working registry in case you should mess up. I have never had a virus or any spyware get into my computer, but every time I log offline I do several checks for any new files, anything that has changed and a pile of other things. Also about once a week I run full virus scans and clean out all the hidden folders that contain internet files that have been dumped into them.
