Question Arizona registration and titles

Gentleman,

I am new here, and hope to find out the right way to register a Cobra replica in Arizona. If any of you are willing to help me out, I would appreciate it. I am currently having a car built and want to know exactly what I need to do to make it legal to drive in our state?

A number have done it in the past few months. I can be painless.

I'm sure those in the know will chime in or email you.

I did mine 3.5 years ago so the process may have changed.

Tell us more about the car?

Email me if you want to join the group fo crazies called Arizona Cobras.

Hi Owentwo

I live in the east of Mesa and the process was really easy - I looked foolish as i ran out of gas while waiting for inspection - i had no idea that a half of a tank on the guage meant empty - but the DMV was good and didn't even seem phased by not being in the line for inspection or even running.

I have a BDR that I registered in Late Jan of this year. I went to the Greefield office and they did an inspection and assigned a VIN even though BDRs have a VIN (i think cost was $25) - I walked around to the front and bought a tag - the process took about 20min with about a 60 minute wait -- let me know if you need any additional info

I did need the following - a MCO, a bill of sale (so they could determine sales tax) and that was about it - about six weeks later Mesa sent me a bill for city Tax - but that was it - it is registeres as a 65 Cobra

let me know if you need more

jim

Thank you for the information.

I am a little bit confused. You mean your drove your car to the Greenfield office with no plates or any kind of permit? What would have happened if you were stopped? Or did you pick up some sort of temporary permit to drive it? Also, did you need to pick up any other paperwork before you go to register the car?

What kind of inspection did they do? I assume brake and lights, but what else was involved? Did they check for just safety issues?

It sounds fairly easy, but are there any "tricks" to make it simple and fast. I have been reading about the guys in California and the horrible process there. It seems much better here, and your experience bears that out.

I am having a Factory Five built by a guy in California. However, he called last night and said he has an almost new Backdraft he bought and that I should look at it. He can sell the Factory Five to another guy easily who really wants it. Any ideas on what I should do? The engine for the Factory Five is still being built, and I could have the Backdraft tomorrow if I want as it is complete. In fact it has the exact engine I have on order.

I am not too sure about Backdraft. What are your experiences so far? I am not the mechanical type, so I had to have someone else build my car. All I know about Factory Five is from riding in one and hearing about all its strengths. I suppose both are OK, which one would you choose?

You can get a temporary 3 day permit. This allows you to travel from point a to point b.

Cost of the permit was one dollar. You can either go to the MVD and get it or go on line.

The backdraft or FFR? Both are good. The BDR will probably be higher in cost. You might want to visit Anthem Motors in Phoenix and check them out in person.

Hi Owentwo

OK - I think i might have left out a couple of things --

You can get a three day registration on the internet for a dollar - this makes it leagle for you to drive - you just pay a dollar using a credit card and print the registration - really easy

The inspection was not for any mechanical stuff - they just checked to see if the MCO matched the the number on the car - on a BDR the VIN is on a already attached to the car - i think the FFR needs you to put the FFR number on a plate and perm attach it. Arizona is not Calif - MrPink told me not to go on Weds and I don't know what part of the valley you are in but the guy that did mine said he did all of the cobras --

As far as the BDR vs the FFR - I really like the folks that i have met and have been on rides with - so I just won't open that can of worms - the cars are different - you are welcome to come by and see the car - while i can point out differences I don't think one is better -- sorry

If i have left any info out just let me know - i was really worrying about the registration but it turned out to be easy - well except for running out of gas

I also took my Lister replica through the MVD in Mesa at the Greenfield branch and it was a breeze as Jim said. Just needed the $1 temporary trip permit, MSO, receipts for the car and major components like the engine and trans. My car is registered as a 1958 Lister (yours will likely be a 196x Ford Cobra) and is therefore exempt for emissions testing. Hooray!!! No Mesa city tax for me but that may be because I live in the thriving urban metropolis of Higley.

Thanks to all of you for helping me with this. It sounds pretty easy, so I am almost looking forward to it! Now I have to decide on which car to get. I like this kind of problem.

I hope to see you on the road someday.
