Does anyone know the trick to get the old bootoff and the new boot on with out damaging it?
I want to avoid tearing it. It is a finish line boot, and I have a top loader with the lockout on the shifter.

Take the ball off and then loosen the set screw inside. The "T" reverse handle slides off then you can remove the boot. Reverse the order after you install the new boot.
I had the same "binding" problem when I switched to the Hurst stick. I used the leather boot from Cobra Valley and saved the rubber boot and Mustang reverse shifter and mount for later use if I want to switch back. Shifts a lot faster and smoother with the Hurst....although you don't have the originality look. I prefer the smoother shift.

I had a local leather shop make a 'custom' boot for me...looks fabulous...works perfectly!

Shift Boot-ing me outta second gear!
I know it's an old thread, but it helped solve my issue. Just ordered the Sunbeam Tiger boot from Sunbeam Specialties and they still carry that part.

I installed the shifter boot from Cobra Valley and couldn’t be happier. Shifts much smoother, looks great and doesn’t kick out of gear in 2nd and 4th like it did with the rubber boot.

Funny that this post was revisited as this just happened to me last week on my Hurst shifter 5 speed on my brand new Cobra. Thought at first that it was the trans problem. but we figured out that it was the boot. I plan on replacing the still rubber style boot with a leather one. That should do it. Interesting that other have had the same problem.

We have a very nice shift boot as per the original Ford unit used in Cobras and Tigers. It is softer than the factory boot so no pulling out of gear issues. https://www.timemachineauto.com/parts-accessories/

The boots that we use can be stretched (carefully) over the T handle on the shifter.

Cars that have a Tremec transmission have a dummy "T". If you remove the shifter ball you can access the Allen set screw that retains the "T". No worries with stretching the bot if the "T" is not there.

Or...you can simply lift the old boot, unbolt the shifter from the Tremec, then slide the boot on from the bottom of the shifter handle...
