Default Sidepipe burn

There's a product called heat chaps from Total Performance (203)265-5667, tperformance.com- that protects you and your passenger from sidepipe burn.

The new issue of American Rodder has an article on them on page 14. These heat shields supposedly have NASA technology behind them (think re-entry tiles on the space shuttle)

I've not burned my leg on my pipes yet but my buddy still has a scar on his ankle from the burn he got last summer. If this heat chap works I won't worry so much when my wife and my friends jump in and out of the car.

Have any of you got nice scars from your pipes?

My first speech to new Cobra buddies is, "Mind the Sidepipes! They will scar you for life! They are so f-ing hot they glow in the dark!"

I have a purple scar under my right forearm from trying to find a starter wire almost a year ago.

Those sidepipes are HOT.

my poor hubby who was kind enough to provide the funds for my little toy, unfortunately is the only one in the experience of my cobra that has been bitten. Not a happy customer. Still has the scar. diligent about the passengers; didn't realize he hadn't ridden enough for it to become second nature.

Yea, I have a few "Cobra" tatoos. Got one right now. Seems like every month or so I have to check the pipe temp with my left ankle.

Lucky I live Hawaii - I have gotten bitten more than once but with
an abundant supply of aloe plants at my house have received minimal
scar tissue. That stuff is a great healer for burns.

Scar? Only one?

Yeah, Hawaii, land of t-shirts, shorts and flip flops. We KNOW side pipe burns.

I got the leg "tatoo" on the first day I had the ERA. Pulled up to a Sunoco station to pump in 94 Octane. Had boat shoes and shorts on. I stepped out of the cockpit, a distance I thought was far enough away. However, when I stood UP, my lower leg's angle straightened and my left ankle sizzled.

I am branded.

Love it.

Guys,

Include me on your leg tatoo list.

After my first drive I was so excited I jumped out of my car with the provably “ear to ear” smile. Unfortunately I was wearing shorts and received a butt ugly second-degree burn on my left calf. I put on some salve, bandaged it, and went to bed thinking, “Life goes on”. The next morning my left calf had doubled in size, I later found out it became infected overnight, and trekked of to the local emergency room. Everything is fine and proudly carry my first drive reminder, but still can't run the four minute mile.

My wife has ended up with two scars on her calf from the exhausts.

Fore some reason, she seems reluctant to get in the car now I've
rebuilt the engine with ported and flowed heads, hotter cam etc

How well do the heat shields work? Do they cool enough to keep the scarring down to less life-threatening?

I got 3 (yes, 3) on my first day.

None since. 2 years ago, now, and there is only a faint ghost of the biggest one... I was hoping it would stick around longer

To those of you who have "tatoos", you might relate to this:

In mili-seconds, but what seems to take forever, the following happens:

[calf rests on hot exhaust]...your brain says, "whoa, that's hot, that's not good...perhaps I should send a signal to the leg to move off that pipe...yeah, that's what I'll do!" Brain sends signal down to leg to move...leg comes off pipe.

I took a test drive in a Superperformance before I purchased my beast and it had nice, pretty stainless steel heat shields. My friend had a bite mark that lasted for over a year. She was proud of it. One problem is that the shields make the pipe diameter larger, making it easier to get bitten. I usually wear Levi's and the couple of times I've brushed the sidepipes I've had no problems. When I wear shorts I make sure I step out just a little further. Also, I had my sidepipes ceramic coated, and that makes them run a tad cooler. Rich

I bought the SS sheilds from FinishLine . They are cool enough after moving but if you are setting for a long time with the engine running before getting in or out ,they will be warm.

I have SS heat shields on mine. I have never had a time when I could not put my hand on them. At worst they get warm to hot but not hot enough to burn you.
I can' believe with all that has been written about "snake bites" that every Cobra owner doesn't have heat shields.

Seems like everyone that has replied is down right proud of thier 2nd degree tatoo, including me! I am even thinking of mounting the Cobra emblem on that very spot so that the next time I touch it, and yes I know there will be a next time, I will have the outline of a snake in stead of a big round burn...

Fortunately, I am 6'4", so getting in or out of the Cobra isnt a problem. That being said, I pulled up to a friends' house, and opened the hood to let him take a look/see at the engine.

I was wearing shorts, and was leaning in to rev the engine at the carb. All of a sudden I feel this SEARING pain on the front of my shin, right on top of the bone, followed by the smell of burning hair!

I can almost laugh about it now. ALMOST!

I only go bit once. Leaning over to clean the windshield and stuck my shin right on the collector. Didn't really hurt at first, but as soon as I was on the road it was really burning.
