I think the problem with heat shields is that they are ugly. Most people will risk the burn rather than ugly the lines of their exhaust. Small children and animals are at risk too.
The product from Total Performance is quite attractive. They are smooth not ridged or baffled. I'm gonna call today and check them out.

Default burns

I really burnt my leg bad in a motorcycle accident once on the exhaust pipe. I'll be pretty careful since I still remember that....vividly.

My wife has two. Funny thing is that whenever I take people for rides, she usually helps get them strapped in. When she helps them out, she always says "Watch your legs!!!" and yet she's done it twice.

Though I had ripped the bottom out on a side pipe, so...reached down to check. The blisters lasted for two weeks.

I can relate to the arm burn.

Build or buy an FIA replica No burns possible unless you are really trying.

CoBro- do you really think heat shields are ugly?

My BDR's shields are perforated mirror-finished stainless, and I think they look 'way cool next to the kinda gold-amber "actual" pipes.

Keep in mind I have 17" Boyds because I hated the 15's and I have dual rollbars so I could mount a gunrack.

My friends have been telling me that I am half-crazy for years.

It reached the point where I had to prove it to them.

Have fun and remember that the semi behind you can't see you!

I think my heat sheilds look good. The only problem with them is that the clamp to hold them to the side pipe is right were you get out of the car. So it transfers the heat to the sheild at that point. But they do help, except when you lean over to look under the hood.

Heat shields belong on corvette's and Honda 90's - not Cobra's.

.......... the CT DMV thinks heat shields belong on Cobras during the initial one time inspection to obtain the registration. However, once out of the DMV property, the heat shields can come off.

In CT, have never heard of anyone getting ticketed for no heat shields, although for some reason the Inspectors like them.

uncltodd,
Most shields I've seen (ala corvette) to me are ugly. These Total Performance items are the only ones I've seen that I actually like.
Its a personal preference though, don't you think?

Heat shields are ugly and are for whimps!
I have never burnt my leg yet, but I've only had it for about 1.5K miles.

A friend of mine had a CSX he bought in 1965 and when he got bitten when in shorts, his calf actually stuck to the sidepipe! OOOOOOUCCCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Sold the Cobra a month later and bought a GTO.

Default It finally happened!

As stated above... every time someone exits or gets near my Cobra, they get the "Watch the pipes!"

Well it finally happened to my 83 yr old father-in-law! He got a nice "snake bite"... a mistake he said he won't make again.

Now he's hope'n he lives long enough for it to heal!

Ask him if he buys green bananas. If he does, he'll be around for a while.

Arrow Long pants only!

You will never see me driving my Cobra in shorts. Just seeing those photos of the 'Snakebites' I've seen posted online was enough for me.

I may still get a slight burn, but it won't peel the skin right off, like those I've seen!

Plus I always help everyone into and out of my car. So I'm right there to see to it, they don't get burned.

I carry one of these 'snakebite kits' in the trunk, just in case!
