Smile mickey thompson sportsman s/r tires

just checking to see if anyone is running the new mickey thompson sportsman s/r radial on there superformance cobra ? specifically the 26x10.00r x 15lt front and the 26x12.00r x 15lt rear any clearance problems?Thanks Jeff

Hey Guys, I'm running a set of MT S/R radials on my Hurricane. 295's on the back and 255's on the front on Vintage pin drivewheels. No clearance problems and they stick like crazy. Look great and perform very well.

Not that this is a habit, but do occasionally get caught in the rain, and good to know how they react.

Bill,

What are the rim-widths you're using? I have a set of 10" and 8" wide Vintiques (?) AND also a set of 12" and 10" wide Centerlines. My Butler cobra is set up for absolutely huge tire widths (up to 17" in the rear), but am considering exactly what you're running on your Hurricane. Unfortunately, I didn't see the M/T S/Rs designated in the 295 and 255 sizes you stipulated. DO you have part numbers on these?

One cobra owner I know runs M/T Sportsman tires---they're non-radial, but he says they're great for drifitng---really predictable. I'd be interested in hearing your opinion(s) about that type, also.

I emailed Mickey Thompson S/R radial asking how they handle and what the treadwear was. They say they handle 'good' (compared to what I don't know) and they did not have a treadwear number. They said they where a 'hard' compound and should last 10-20k. So, not to hard!

Fred,

I purchased #6653 26x10.00R15/LT/M/TSPT/SR for the fronts, and #6654 26x12.00R15/LT/M/T/SPT/SR FOR THE REARS.
I have Vintage pin drive wheels 10" wide in the front and 12", they are fine as for clearence in the wheel wells and no problem turning. The tires seem to work great and grips well and slides smoothly if you get on it in the lower gears. Although I'm a novice as far as racing goes, the car (Hurricane) handles great and steers straight at high speeds 110 mph and feels very stable.
So far I'm happy with the tires, by the way the reason I bought them over Goodyear and BFG is their high speed rating (100mph) and the Flame tread design. I think they are available through any tire shop by special order.

I just put new wheels and tires on my car. Vintage Wheels 5 pin 15x7.5 on the front and 15x9.5 on the rear. Mickey Thompson 26x10 R 15 Lt #6653 on the front and 26x12 R 15 LT #6654 on the rear. These are H rated tires at 130 MPH. I’ve only had them on for a week. They are smaller than the BFG’s I had. But this combination has balanced perfectly. The ride is softer. I have not pushed it yet so I don’t know about handling. The tires took 3 weeks to get through Big-O tires. Had a lot of problems with the wheels but Bob Lacey at Vintage Wheels took care of everything. Excellent service.

Looks like you repainted the car! Wow!
I do have a question about your description of the tires: when you said they were "smaller than the BFGs", did you mean outside diameter or tread-width?

Fred, I can attest from having tried the exact front tires that he is referencing outside diameter. They will look more squatty (if that's the right description?!?) than what we are used to running and the shoulders are a little more square than your typical GY/BFG/Dunlop. The height actually swayed my ultimate decision and I went with drag radials on all four corners as a result. The S/R's are a good looking tire though, I'll give them that, and with the recent limiting decisions (no Avids, no Goodyears, etc.) I can see a lot of Cobra enthusiasts leaning toward these as a cost effective alternative to an Avon or even a set of drag radials.

Tom,

Yes---for a while----and then I decided to redo the paint, which was chipping off the too-hard primer. I'm seriously thinking about black----also (of course) new tires. I have some "new" Centerline rims which look sorta like the old Lamborghinis (!?) with the deep lug holes. They're fully 12" and 10" and can take mega tires. Hence the questions.

As for relaunch of the completed car-----it's sorta looking like February. Still futzing with the stroker--more or less pay as I go. My builder is a really good guy and lets me do lots of the work (that would be the not too critical work, that is---ar-ar-ar-ar-ar),

That stuff you sent on the roll bar angle put me miles ahead.

Freddie,

I am not acquainted with centerline wheels. The old Anson Sprint Mags I had were held on with caped nuts and washers. This means no conical lug nut registering in a counter sunk wheel stud hole. My problem was the washer holding the wheel on would allow the wheel to be mounted slightly different each mounting resulting in out of balance. I discovered this by marking the hub and wheel then removing the wheel and installing it 180 degrees from the hub mark. All of a sudden my unbalanced wheel becomes balanced. Just the weight of the wheel while tightening the nuts would shift the wheel enough to change the balance at each install. I spent 7 years and hundreds of $$ trying to get a good balance that was never possible. My new wheels are prefect.

My old wheels were 8.5 in front and 10 in the rear. Now 7.5 in front and 9.5 in the rear. The fronts actually look good now because they were sticking out beyond the wheel well too much. The rears now are too much in from the wheel well. But everything will stay as is because I’m generally happy with it all.

Black is a great color. You can’t do wrong with that. Good luck with everything. Give me a ring if you have any questions.
