Duane -
The Avons are smoother. It is really hard/unfair to try to compare these two tires. The Yokos are a really good value for an all around tire. The Avons are a really expensive very high performance tire.

Hey Lew -
How do you like the Avons? How do they compare to whatever you used before?

That's good news, Steve. I know those Yoko Avid's are cheap, but man, they were so smooth after a good balance on my wheels/tires; at any price. I had compared them to 5 other tires before hand. I see the Avon's are possibly made by Cooper Tire? ...Or at least from the small font in one ad I saw. Interesting if its true.

So far the Yoko Avid has been the best tire in 15" size I have used. They are mainly made for trucks, so the rubber is hard and made to last.
The Avon is a race tires, so it is supposed to be sticky and not made with high mileage in mind
Avons may be the solution for grip fanatics like me.
Let us know how they behave.

I think the idea behind the Avons was a tire with a vintage look, but with a radial construction. Basically, a modern alternative to the bias bly Goodyear billboards. I have no complaints on my Goodyears though.

Do the Avons pick up rocks and throw them into the underside of the fender?

Same question. I have enough paint chips with the Good Year II's. As mentioned many.........times here on CC, I wish Good Year would produce Billboards in a radial !

Question- did any of the original race teams use Avon's here in the USA ?

Yes, they do, but not as bad as I had expected. Nevertheless, I do plan on having the inside of my fender well sparyed with Linex to be safe.

BTW, I saw a brand new SPF roller being worked on at Classic Concepts in West Babylon and Nick showed me how a mesh liner in all the fender wells now come pre-installed. Nice how the manufacturer has reacted to owner's feedback on lining fenderwells to avoid star cracks. I lined mine with Dynamat.

nice looking tire, but looks like a slightly treaded slick. I can't tell from the photo, but do you have any idea of the tread depth, most new tires are 8/32's or so, are these much more shallow?

thanks,

Hi Hal -
I don't have a real accurate ruler, but I measure the tread between 6 and 7/32 deep.

Default true test?

It will be interesting once someone tries the Avons on the track to see how they stack up against the Blue Streaks or even the current "King of the Hill" Goodyear Stock Car Special slicks.....

Hey, Steve. Nice to see your car, all shod in new rubber! I like them as M/T SR's was my other choice.....but want to see how these work for you......If you don't mind, keep me on line in PM's as well as on this thread as to the ride and such....they do seem to look good, would you agree? I really like the lok of my BFG's but they just will not hook up if in race mode..........
thanks, Steve...............Fred z

Fred -
I'll be glad to keep you posted. My initial impression (with only the Yokos for a reference) is of course that these tires are great. I definitely recorded my mileage when I installed these tires and will be closely monitoring the exact cost of the extra smiles per mile. Feel free to email me directly anytime.

Do they stick when you nail it in 1st, 2nd, 3rd....? Do they throw stones? I'd love a set of all around performance 15s.

None, much smoother than the previous Yoko Avids.

I can still light the tires up from a roll in first, but they are definitely biting much harder and better than Yokos. Yes, they will throw some stones, but not nearly as bad a full racing slicks. In the spring I'll be able to make some passes at the strip and see exactly how much improvement there is in straight line traction. I am guessing I will pick up a couple of tenths - but that's just a seat of the pants guess.

Steve. I did send you a PM, but regardless......what type of motor are you running? I have 550 hp and tq, so anything that can grab a bit better would be nice..................
