Mustang Sheby GT or Mustang GT 500?
Yes, I am fickle.
Do you guys think a Shelby GT for $2500.00 over sticker is a good buy. Do you think it will be a collectible?
Do you think a GT 500 is a better buy at $55K?
I have a hook on both cars and deciding on which.
Appreciate your thoughts.

From what I've read, it seems like the Shelby GT, which is closer to the Hertz car, handles better than the GT500 and is more fun to drive. But it would appear that from a collectors standpoint, horsepower seems to rule long term values.

Why not buy both of them. Drive each for a while. Lets say 2500 miles on each at most. Then sell the one that leasts interests you. You'll get your money back on either one.
If you need more money then just sell your Cobra Replica. You can always pick up another one of those. Just kidding on this -- enjoy your difficult decision.

Are both the Shelby GT and the GT 500 limited production?
Is the Shelby GT eligble for the Register?

interesting that the 500 is built @ ford in michigan, the GT is being completed at Vegas.
Does that make a difference?
Don't know if the GT is going in registry, but seems to me that it would.
If you go to the Shelby forum there is a fun 'link' to see 'where your car is in production'.
i like the hood pins on the GT. Limited to the two color choices, as well.
It looks good!
Happy with my choice.

If I were you I'd get the Shelby GT; at least that way you'd finally have a real original Shelby ( Sorry couldn't resist)

I am aghast! ...YOU...of all people...asking that question!
It's REAL simple.... the GT500 and the new KR are (IMHO) be-stickered Mustangs that simple carry the garnish of an endorsement deal. They roll off the assembly line at FORD by the thousands and merrily wheel-hop their way down the road.
On the other hand, the Shelby GT is a performance built version of a factory car...where a certain company buys them bare-bones from Ford, brings them to their shop and make it "like it should have been made"...with no apologies.
Sound familiar?
To me....if you bought one, the Shelby GT would be the REAL-est thing you would own.

...and both will be in the Registry of SAAC 2.0
(SAAC 2.0 is whatever the club will end up looking like after 10,000 people join and want their 'special' GT500's in a registry book.)

i don't think the 500 or the GT should be in the registry.
too diluted. these cars are going to change hands too frequently, and it will be obsolete before it's printed.
Keep it with the 'real' or 'original' stuff.
a sellout or copout, i think.
JMHO.

I like the GT, but would prefer a REAL (functional) hood scoop and a few more ponies.

I keep hearing the Roush based Mustangs are much better bang for the buck if you are going for performance... but I would like the shelby name for nothing else than resale value. Do you think these two cars will continue to sell for what people are paying over sticker in the future? I also really like the Parnelli Jones mustangs...only 500 of those being made.

In the April MotorTrend magazine (which also has a pretty good article on a unmolested 289 roadster as mentioned in another thread), there are a couple pages on the Shelby GT; "They say they'll build as many Shelby GT's as people will buy, capping production at 10,000 units to maintain exclusivity."
The GT is only available in white or black, and only as a coupe.
Part of the article compares the GT to the 1966 GT350 which IMHO is the wrong car to compare it to... should have been the 67, 68 or 68 cars.

I can verify that there is a registry for the GT as we have registered my wife's GT. The forum on the Shelby site also discussed how many GTs are scheduled for 2007 and the answer appears to be that only 6,000 GTs are to be sold as 2007s and the article had over quoted the number. The last time I had checked, they were waiting for SAI to provide a definitive answer. I'll check and let you know if anything has been posted in that regards.

Well.... 69 and 70 (which are re-VINed leftover 69s) Shelbys are also Ford built cars that Shelby never touched, yet they still are valued as real legit Shelbys.
Evan's question is an interesting one.
I personally, do see the value of the Hertz and Shelby GT as being modified BY Shelby directly. However, both of those cars still lack any real performance compared to what you can buy off the showroom floor from most manufacturers in todays world - even in non-peformance cars. Very similar to the Bullitt Mustang. A cool as hell limited production car, that wasn't any faster then a stock Mustang GT.
Even though the GT500 may have never been touched by Shelby, it's still worth, and always will be worth, way more than the Hertz or Shelby GT. This is from the simple fact that the car is SO much more than just a hopped up base GT. Everything on the car is different, from the motor and trans, to the brakes and wheels, to the body and interior. It's a totally different car, with WAY more performance.
Some may buy it because it's a Shelby, but I feel that most buy it because it's a continutation of the SVT limited performance vehicle legacy (i.e. the currect "Cobra" without the badging).

Think Sal has made a few good points.
Probably won't matter down the road that the new GT500 was built on Fords assembly line like the later Shelbys of 69 and 70 were.
And...as he mentioned, the 2001 Bullitt mustang, which was what I purchased as my little slice of Ford history turned out to have a ton of cool factor built in but really lacked in the seat of the pants department.
While in Florida a few months back the wife and I rented the Shelby H #06H222 and after spending a week with and "enjoying" (thought about replacing the rear tires) for some 500 miles it quickly reminded me why I evently let the Bullitt go...Lots of cool factor, but not enough go.
So,based on seat time with those two slighty tuned Mustangs I would go for the GT500 over the Shelby GT...IF you plan on driving it even if that drive time is limited.

I would buy the Ford GT500 over the Shelby. The Shelby doesn't seem to have alot of power (says 325HP)

that's true that hp seems to have driven values on the classic stangs over the long term. At the same time time, the way things are going now, in the long term the stock V6 mustang will eventually have 400hp and the V8 will have even more. The future mustang SVTs will make the GT 500 and Shelby GT seem flat out underpowered. So I wouldn't count on either being considered all that special based onpower.
