My high volume mechanical fuel pump works great, and there is NO switch to forget.

I'm glad you found your problem. I had the same situation happen and it was a bad coil that would shut off whenever it got hot.

I run a mechanical fuel pump but I have been thinking about also installing an electrical one so that the carb bowls are completely full before starting, especially when the car has been sitting for a while. I seem to remember thatmany people have had problems with the Holley electrical fuel pumps.

What type of electrical pump is most reliable?

Wayne

Ture007, lack of fuel or extremely low on fuel in the carb causes a lean condition which leads to a backfire on occasion.

Wayne,

I ran a Holly Blue Electric pump on my Cobra for 10 years and never had any problem. I must have gotten the one good one they made from what everyone else says about them. The coupe has an Aeromotive on it.

How did you verify the pump was bad? Only 3-4 psi of pressure will not cause the symptoms you said you had. My own car runs at 3-4 psi on the mechanical pump and 6-7 psi on the electric with no change in how it runs.

Did you ever pull the dist and check the roll pin like I originally suggested?

You stated at the beginning your pump pressure was fine.

I hope this works for you.

Thanks everyone for all the help. Turned out to be the magnetic pick-up in the distributor. Working great now!

How did you determine it was the pick-up? Seems funny that it would be intermittent.

Good reason to carry an extra, though, and they're cheap.

Thanks,

Lowell
