No, I didn't buy it. It wasn't a 427. I wouldn't have been interested in the car anyway. It's most likely a 352 or a 390. He said that the previous owner put dual exhaust on it, so more than likely, the engine wasn't anything special.

I talked to the guy for quite awhile and walked him through several things to see if it was a 427 or not. It definitely was not. And believe me, he wanted it to be...because I told him if it was a 427 I was coming after it.

I then had him check to see if it was a C/O....it didn't have cross bolted mains and it didn't have screw in freeze plugs either. So that eliminated the possibilities of a 427 C/O and a 406.

First of all not all co has screw in feeze plugs. Also not all 406's were cross bolted. Only late 406's were cross bolted. Lastly, there has even been a few 427's that weren't cross bolted. they however were iffigation motors

That may be true, Ford made all kinds of freak engines....but the majority of the 427's and 406's that I've seen had screw in plugs and cross bolted main caps. The S/O's have the plug in the front.

I'm not driving 2.5 hours just to spend 30 seconds looking at this engine. If it's got a special motor in it, then I can about guarantee that someone would have snagged it by now and it wouldn't have been priced for $3000.

There has been "barn finds" and sweet deals...but I highly doubt this is one of them.

Who knows, I could very well eat my words....but the time and trouble wasn't really worth it to me if it wasn't a side oiler.

When all the questions were asked...did anyone asked about the door/window tag code?? Even if it doesn't have a 427 in it, it could still be a 427 car. However, the comment about the installation of dual exhaust could negate that. 42 years is a lot of time for drivetrain changes, for various reasons. I had a Mach I (428CJ) that I owned from '71-'90 and had 3 different powertrains....428CJ,289,351W and then back to the 428. If it is a correct code car without the engine, it is probably still a good value at the price.

I went to a junk yard to check on a 7 Litre Galaxie some time back, they got it from the original owner's family, 60,000 mile unmolested car for sale for $800.00, running condition.........It was/had a factory 428 in it, guy sold it the day before I got there, I did track down the new owner and it was definetly a 428 in it.............
