Tongue Pirate

Hyde,

My thinking or logic is; I should be able to carry more than the allocated allowance of 50lbs as I have lost of 32lbs myself. But the airline guys don't see it that way.

I had considered leaving the bike in HB, but then it was hardly worth the hassle for the three days of riding there. Apart from the fact I would possibly get lost...

I have read the Danieldson articles about Durango and ther Iron Horse race

That may be a future cycle only trip..

There are plenty of good rides within reach of HB. One of the most fun, I think, is Mulholland Rd. There are many great climbs leading up to it or you can start at the west end & enjoy the Santa Monica Mountains & Descend back down to the Pacific Coast Hwy on any of the main roads.

Sounds tempting..

As I have a spare week in Cal. I'll take a drive up a few of those streets.

I will also spend some time looking around Hollywood area. I was dropped off at Hollywood and Vine and wandered around for half a day a year or so back.

It was interesting just taking in the sights/sites.

This will be a real lay back week.

Bernie, I was going to offer up one of the worlds greatest Hot rod shows and swap meets but I checked the schedule for the Pomona Swap Meet and they dont meet in Sept because of the County Fair being there. That should give you an idea of how big this show is. If you could change your plans the two dates that come closest to your dates are Aug 26 and Oct 14. Here is their website. If you rented a car its about a 30 minute drive from HB. http://www.pomonaswapmeet.com/future.htm

My sons both live in Huntington Beach, I'll ask em whats going on there.
Michael

Well, best world you'll get a cobra tour of the mountains If you do get the chance, go up Deer Creek(one of the last roads up into the santa monica mountains on the west end). Eventually this road T's at Yorba Buena, Take a right & that will drop ya back down at Neptunes Net. Neptunes Net is a popular lunch spot across the street from the beach & Deer Creek is the Climb that proves you a cyclist(That's my opinion anyway). 2 miles, 1400'. I try to do it in the biggest gear Possible. 39-21 is my best so far. Great Climb! Awsome Views!

michael4yah,

Michael,

Thanks mate. Yes would have loved to see Pomona swap. It's a lot of years since I was last there. Cannot change the dates though. Tickets are booked and hire cars etc. Not to worry..

My gallery contains a few pictures of the Street Rods that I had - 1937 convert. and a 1928 Roadster are both there.

There appears to be a few smaller events on during this week, which is good.

I have the opportunity to catch up with a friend who stayed with me last year and he has offered to take a run in his Cobra which will be great.

Thanks for the offer of checking with your sons. I'll be staying at 19th between Palm and the ocean whilst at HB..

Bernie

Tongue Pirate

Hyde,

I will print this all off prior to the September departure. Will take a drive up there. I'll make sure I have a navigation system this time as I'll have a little spare time to get lost..

There are a few hills around here that test my 23 gear and I find that I really struggle on some of them with respiratory issues - it's the Lac. acid threshold that kills me.

I like you try and use the higher gears each run. Starting with the 23 and going down to 21 then 19 and keeping the revs/cadence up above 75..

Maybe I need to watch that TDR France stage with Floyd again, to see how it's done.

Will watch with interest - with his result/finding out soon.

Did you see that the designer of the test equipment basically said that the French lab. had no idea how to use the equipment correctly and they did not following procedures correctlty with his B sample etc.

Mmmm.

Thanks again with you help and advice on September.

Bernie

Pro Cycling has become tainted by the whole doping issue. I'll be glad when It's all passed....if it ever does... Floyd is a great cyclist. I'd give him his due if he was proven guilty just ffor the fact that there is no proving that everyone else wasn't dirty.

Guess we have the best of both worlds.

The only negative is that I have lost 14kg - 32lbs - and just about the entire wardrobe has been replaced. Not to mention motor racing gear.

Think the only things that still fit are the boots and helmet...

Think I may have mentioned that the white '66 Mustang in my gallery is now owned by my mentor - even if 20 years younger - Cadel Evans. He has the car stored in Melbourne and often calls in here at home when he is not racing in Europe..

.. it took him three years to convince me to take up cycling but I relented. He is ahard task master when here making sure I'm out training and doing the right thing diet wise.

Try www.cadel.com.au

THat's great! I've lost 20lbs myself. Feels good to be fit again. Cadel must be great to ride wiith. Always good to have someone who pushes you to your limits. & yes, the belt is a few notches tighter

Bernie, what size frame do you ride? I live a couple of miles inland from HB and I have a spare bike you are welcome to borrow when you are here. I'd be happy to show you some of the local rides if I can work it into my schedule. Flats or killer hills, we've got 'em all. You can even ride over to Hillbank and visit with Lance Stander and the guys if you want.

I ride a Scott CR1 at 58. Dura ace group set.

Would be good to catch up with Lance. I meet with him at Saac at Fontana and have been down to his business a few years back.

A great visit, he took me over to his home and we met with his Australian neighbour a tennis player who was housebound with a hip replacement.

I as well would be happy to lend you a bike if you all want to do a weekend Cobra owners group ride I have my Old steel 56cm Pinarello set up more like a big 57cm bike which is pretty close to 58. It has keo style pedals & downtube shifters if ya like it like an old european. It's a great bike & the bike I put the most miles on, to be honest. Rings in just under 20lbs, Not bad for a steely. Anyhow, the offer is there & we could even switch out the pedals if you bring yours.

Well, at 54 cm, mine are probably a bit small for you. If you are still interested in having a bike in HB, I'll check with some friends. We all tend to be in the "you can never have too many bikes (or Cobras) club."

Once you see what it is like around HB in Sept. you will definitiely want to ride!

I'll be staying in 19th between Palm and the ocean.

I have walked the beach front and know the sites...

I have access to a cruiser also. Big white wall tires/tyres and a big comfy seat...

Guess it's site seeing or training. The site seeing sounds pretty good....

Are any of the Street Rod businesses open to visitors..
