I think it was "hi-tech" - Tulsa, Ok. circa 1957. Draw your own conclusions.
From what I understand, it was a publicity stunt designed to put Tulsa on the map. I don't know if the 'tax payers' got stuck with the bill - but you have to admit, it's put Tulsa, Ok. circa 2007 on the map - so maybe those rubes should be applauded for their far-sightedness.
Sunken treasure discovered in Oklahoma! You can't buy this kind of publicity.

1000 gallons of grease might have helped ... but this Christine is down for the count.

Probably cost what, maybe 5 grand tops, back then, for the car, concrete, backhoe operator, landscaping, etc.. Imagine what it's brought Tulsa this week in restaurant and hotel revenues. Probably did the same when it was buried. Great idea on somebody's part!

AND THEN...Some lucky person will transfer the soggy title to the high bidder car museum and end up with a new house. Not too bad for just having the right sperm donor...

What a great story! Kind of a win win win all around!

Amen, Lowell. I saw a lot of tears when they saw the condition of the vault - but frankly, I think the whole saga is very cool regardless of the soggy contents.
Most time capsules have expiration dates long after the original participants could live to see it opened. It's neat to see a 50 year time frame so that some of those around in '57 could see it opened.

I agree BB, it is very sad. I found it to pretty cool just to see the car, knowing the history behind it.

BB - Were you there to see it being buried? How was the show?

The contents of the time capsule itself are in terrific shape, even the cards that have the names of the contestants (to guess the population of Tulsa in 2007) on them. Curious to find out who won.

BB - I sent you a pm, we are putting together an informal Cobra Club in the area, hoping you're interested.

Randy
