Mac Archer -Another loss for the Cobra community
Paul, Pdhse, just sent me a note about the news of the passing of Mac Archer.
Many of us knew him from his regular presence at the Monterey Historics, with that wicked CSX3195
Quote:
"Mac", died June 18, 2007 at Stanford Medical Center. He was 58. Complications from the treatment of leukemia was the cause of Mac's way too early death.

What a tragedy, for someone so talented..
I shot pictures of him racing at Monterey for several years, so was surprised when he told me he had an incurable disease....but he was still determined to keep racing as long as he could. I thank Steve Earle for letting him. In every way, Mac personified the "Gentleman Racer" and also saved the 427 Cobra's reputation now that a lot of people are thinking maybe the 289 Cobra is the better handler.
If I could emulate anyone's vintage racing career, it would be his...

Sometimes awful things happen to really fine people. God bless.

I got to see Mac race at the Historics races at Pacific Raceways here in Washington at least a couple times. He really put on a good show and typically handed those Corvettes and any other big bore cars their asses....in a gentlmanly way of course. Very sorry to hear of this bad news. Best wishes to his family and friends.

He had a tough time fighting it...but he tried to never let it show. A true gentleman.
Going to be a bit sparce at the Historics this year.

That is really a shame. It will indeed be sad to watch the Cobras run this year without 198 & 22.
Rest in peace, Mac. Thanks for the memories.

I am really sad to hear the news. I've seen him and his red 427 more times than I can count at Monterey...I make a point of going every year. He could really drive the wheels off that car, and was always a fan favorite.
My condolences go to his family. Rest in peace.

Watching a very skilled driver muscling a well prepared Cobra around Laguna Seca has always been the highlight of the Monterey weekend. The Historics just won't be the same.
My condolences.

Mac
He might just of had more seat time in the same 427 than anyone in history. Here is another video link of him.

That's a shame and I'm sorry to hear he passed. I agree he sure could throw that car around the track. I have a few tapes from Monterey with him in it.
My condolences to the family.

I met him when I was 16 and he was a dahing young OB doc at CHOMP Monterey. He was the nicest of all the Docs to a loely orderly. He shared Cobra stories with me and got me out to the historics as a teen. Monterey will never be the same

This one really hurts. I had the great pleasure of visting with Mac every year at Monterey and held him in the highest regard as a gentleman of grace and class. Watching him roar his immaculate Cobra around the hillis of Laguna Seca is the main reason I've gone back every year since I first saw him in 1997. Fittingly, it was the year Shelby was featured.
I remember the anger I felt at the 2002 event (Corvette year) when Mac got T-boned in turn one by some Corvette yoicks driving over his head. Bad enough to be punched out of the race, but it also meant that he had to miss the next year's event, when Ford racing had its 100th anniversary.
Mac always struck me as the complete picture of a gentleman racer, both in terms of his nature as a man and his remarkable talent in the cockpit of "Old Bertha" #22. I'll still be at Monterey this year, but it won't be the same at all.
Rest in peace.
