I don't!
More is *not* always better, especially for a road car.
I've built myself a really super burnout machine. For road duty, I have to move the throttle fulcrum and run it half throttle as well as set the blow-off to near zero boost as to not kill myself coming out of every corner. And, that's with a big body cobra weighing in at nearly 3000lbs. There is a point of ridiculousness. I've found it. That's why I call the project "Ludicrous Speed".
I would shoot for no more than 500rwhp. The easiest way to get there is cubic inches. The second easiest is boost. If you're going to stay within the confines of a small block, I'd move over to the 351W platform and build a 351, 396 or 408 with CHI heads, cam it for 6500rpm, and live with whatever it makes...which will be more than enough. Or, stay with the 302 platform, use a boss block and build a little 7.8:1 302 with some TFS heads and put a T-Trim on it. Or, throw a 385 series in it, add a 4.5" stroke crank, build it 9:1 compression with some Kaase heads and if it doesn't make 500rwhp by 5K, something is wrong. Just depends on what you're after...there's a lot of ways to get there.
