Hmm, even more interesting is that picture #7 in the auction shows a Shelby tag (or some kinda tag) on the driver's side inner fender... I sent a question to the seller asking for a photo or clarification of that tag...

Sorry - I would not touch a car without any VIN number and without a title. Especially a rust bucket for $12K or more.

There are hidden numbers...........the highway polizi has a list of where they are located. If none I would not set foot in the state it is located.

I saw a guy trying to restore a very similar car here in Florida for a client and it came with a title but was I think in worse shape rust wise than this GT500. He removed so much rusted metal that the jig he had welded into place to hold the shape of the car alone would have cost the client plenty. The resent asking prices of original GT500 and now many clones and the fact there was only so many manufactured in 1968 make these pieces of junk valuable with or with out titles or Vin numbers from Ford.

The difference is that this car has no vin. There is a now a '68 convertible that prev was not a shelby now running around with this cars vin # .

So you restore this car, use another 68 car as a donor, and get it titled with the original vin, so now there are two 68 gt500's with the same vin, and the "original gt500" still sits in pieces.

Default Shelby without VIN

I wonder if they are listing the re-body correctly in the Shelby Registry?

I'm not sure you guys understand.
This car DOES have a vin and a Shelby tag and a secret Mustang vin number under the tag, at this tiime.
What the seller is saying is that he is keeping those items and the wheels and the towels, and they will not come with the car when you buy it for parts.
If you could read the number off of the tag you would know which one it was.

Food for thought:
If you knew which one it was and bought the car and had a new tag made, which would be the real car ? The real vin tag with the new car,
or the original car with the new vin tag ? This happens all the time with GT40s and Lolas, and I suppose Cobras and GT Shelbys as well.

So say the winner of this auction now owns the original GT-500 and has legal possession of this Shelby/parts car, now everyone on the planet knows he ( the seller) REMOVED the original VIN plate from the ORIGINAL Shelby with pictures of the car. Now the new owner contacts the DMV in Florida with his weasel lawyer and demands the car he just bought had the ORIGINAL VIN # plate removed and installed on another 68 mustang convt. Who do you think will end up with the real GT-500?
I think the seller is in deep SH!T and sinkin fast

So is tearing the tag off your mattress.

...OK, not a great comparison (unless it's an 'air mattress').

Personally, I would rather have an original car with a rusty patina (OK Real rusty in this case) than a 1968 Mustang with the tag from a Shelby on it.

You like a rusty enough car where you can put your feet thru the floor like Fred Flintstone? It looks like you can see the ground in front of the passenger seat.

Yes, just like the first one I had when I was 15 years old.
To be honest, I think the car should staty with the tag and the re-body and if the new car is sold, the old car should go with it. Then the new owner will have the car. Why even go to the trouble to rebody the car then ? The thing to do would be to just duplicate the car for driving and keep the old car with the vin intact. That is done often for racing old valuable vintage cars.

Maybe I am missing something here....

I think the auction is quite clear, if you read everything he says. He says it's an original GT500, that has been rebodied. A rebody on a Mustang, is a whole new car. That means that the base body is NOT the original GT500 car. At some point, all the bolt on body parts and the drivetrain were transferred to this regular Mustang body. Now the drivetrain is gone, and all that's left is a Mustang body with some GT500 body parts on it. The car is not being sold with the VIN or the title, which is the RIGHT thing to do, because it's no longer that car anyway. It's a stock 68 Mustang with some Shelby parts bolted to it.

Being sold as it is, I don't see anything wrong with it. It's being sold as a parts body for Shelby parts. The seller is not giving the new owner the chance to make a new fake Shelby.

If anyone is bidding on this car thinking it's a real GT500, or with the intent to MAKE a "real" GT500, they are fools and at their own mercy of stupidity.
