Default Stupid question

When talking about crankcase "open system" and "closed system" what is the difference?

An open system draws fresh air straight from the atmosphere while a closed system pulls air from the air cleaner or one of the lines to the air cleaner. The closed system is more "green" in that if your crankcase pressure builds up the fumes will be forced back in to the intake system rather than just "leak" out.

Thank you for the explanation. What seems to be the best set up "open", "closed"? Or does it matter?

I honestly don't believe there is really much of a performance impact between the two. But if you put environmental concerns aside, an "open" system is a bit simpler. FWIW, I run an open system on my FE. Regardless of whether you choose open or closed, a PCV system is good for your engine.

A closed system has the advantage of not having any blowby fumes around the car. If you get stuck in traffic and your electric fan comes on, you can end up with fumes blowing into the cockpit - I like them, my wife does not. With a closed system, the blowby goes back into the engine, hopefully to be burned - wow, I'm becoming a treehugger!
