Wayne and Jimi,
While I refuse to stop and ask directions, when I installed my bearing I read the instuction about three times and had Tilton on the phone while I installed the bearing. I guess I called them three or four times, checking and double checking, before I felt it was in right. Roscoe |
Here's the thing...they are great when they work (good pedal feel, packaging, etc.), and the vast majority last as long as you need. The problem comes if and when you end up with a problem out in the middle of phuking nowhere (a description of 80% of the land west of the Rockies).
With an external slave, you dig out the seal kit you were smart enough to carry with you or get to the nearest Napa, Pep Boys, etc. and you fix the sumb!tch, fill it and bleed it and get on your merry phuking way. With an internal...pull out your AAA card and wait a few hours for the truck and then sit on the bench seat next to the tow truck driver and listen to his view of the world while he spits chew juice out the window (when his aim's good), and then figure out how to get your beast home so you can: 1) pull the motor and trans out, or 2) pull your interior and trans out...and then redo the little basturd all over again. Sh!t WILL fail on these basturds (notwithstanding Hal and his Cobra from another planet)...the issue is how easy it will be to fix and get back on the road. KISS ;) |
Are you trying to put a Malocchio on me????
Roscoe |
Hehehe... ;)
Here's looking at you, kid. |
I saw way too many fail before I purchased my Shelby and made the decision to go with the external. As Jamo pointed out. Its a matter of how easy and quickly you can make a repair when it does fail.

BDR561,
I have a new in box QT bellhousing complete with a slave cylinder mounted and billet throwout arm. Takes a standard ford throw out bearing. These work great. let me know if you are interested. Dean |

I have all the items QT, slave, etc... What bracket was used to mount the slave? What does your billet arm look like? |

Cashburn,
You have posted the picture of your bracket before, but it is really to dark to get a "feel" for what it is connected to etc. Could you take a new picture and post it? BTW how much do you want for a bracket? |
dont waste your time and clutchs oh and taking your trans out 6 times wasnt fun either
|
external slave all the way!

I really didn't know about them new fangled things called clutches...seemed like they were for sissys. Bite me for doubting me. :D |
The EXTERNAL slave on my ERA failed some time ago, on the road away from home IN TOWN! Dang stop lights, I made a bunch of 'right turns' because stopping was a serious problem. :D
Shifted without the clutch on the way home, piece of cake, like a hot knife through butter once your rolling. |
IMHO,
The hydraulic throw out bearing is right next to Osama Bin Laden on my list of my most favorite things in life. We have changed 5 of them out this year already. I am pretty sure we installed them correctly. I am very sure the swollen o-rings (ALMOST TWICE THEIR NORMAL SIZE) was not correct. Yes, we even used the "recommended" brake fluid. Someone put the wrong formula rubber in the o-rings. We called and they "fixed" that problem...yes, and I pulled another 4 OUT after the fix!!! They are an abomination and I wouldn't defile the ocean by giving them the "deep 6" test. There, now you know how I feel. I think Jamo's opinion of them is only slightly worse than mine. David    |
David, I wish you and Jamo would not sugar-coat it. Tell us how you REALLY feel.
|
I could have gotten more descriptive
You should have heard Jamo when I told him we had developed a NEW hydraulic throw out bearing that I guaranteed would not leak. Jamo told me to put it in unmentionable places that look too much like his avatar... I repented and developed an external system! Haven't had to pull one out since. David :):):) |
But David you love them in 2005.:D
http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/show...highlight=HTOB I like mine because it is working fine. I do agree that if there is a problem with it, pulling the tranny aint fun and if you don't get it right to have to pull it right out again scores very high on the sucko meter. When I build another car it will have a slave. |
