Default Racing V-Belts

"Back in the day" we used to buy special hi-po v-belts for our cars. Goodyear made a special belt that was intended for racing. All my local suppliers carry Gates belts, but apparently Gates doesn't make a hi-po belt.

What belt(s) are you running?

I believe that Doug meant the belts on the engine as he used V belts. If not I know that my seat belts are Simpsons, but since I don't have the car home now and won't for several months, I can't remember the name of the belts that I have on it.

Red face Dough!

I thought he was talking about the old 'Y' belts that Simpson used to make!

Doug;

The Gates belts will do just fine........same belts on my street car for 10 years now, it has seen plenty of open track and about to 75 1/4 passes, no problems what-so-ever.........

Gates belts on the road race car for 2 seasons, no problems, they'll stay on for a while, I do carry an extra set to the track, and as long as I have a spare set, I know mine will never go out...........

I see you use a crotch strap - probably why you misunderstood the v-belt question

David
Are you using a standard Gates belt or do they make a heavy duty/racing version?

Doug;

Just the plain ole belts off the rack.....I have a long, old belt that I cut some years ago, I use it for measurement purposes.....Get the length you need and tell them the groove width of your pulleys and they'll pull one off the rack, that's all I do..........

Dayco is the MFGR that made the racing belts, they had alternating white bands on the outer suface to present a visual cue. I have tried to find some of theses but to no avail. I would be interested.

Yeah, that's what I'm talkin' about. A racing belt. I remember the stripes/special markings. Only one of the six local auto parts stores carries anything but Gates. Nothing wrong with Gates, but they must have one hell of a sales staff to penetrate the entire market like that. I did find a Goodyear belt dealer, but their Gatorback belt is what they offer as a heavy-duty unit. No racing belt according to them.
I'll try looking for a Dayco brand. I'll post here if I find anything.

David
I used an old piece of rope to get the approximate length. They showed an application for a '64 Ford w/427 and no A/C that is 45" long, which was within an inch of my measurements.
I know what you mean about having a spare - once you have one, you can pretty well bet that you'll never need it. Only the ten cent item that you don't have with you will fail....

I heard that most (many? some?)
NASCAR teams use Dayco Top Cog Racing Belts.

http://www.daycoproducts.com/daycowe...7?OpenDocument

Just click on the Parts and Service Locater and type in your zip code

Once you find out the part number for your belt, this site has many belts from a closed NASCAR race shop at cheap prices ...

Goodyear still makes the Gatorback Racing V-Belt and they are available from Summit ... find your V width and length and call Summit.

The hipoparts.com web site also carries some of these belts too.
