Default One brand of engine will kill Nascar

I have been a Nascar fan for over 40 years. If they ever deceide to go with a spec engine I will be looking for another sport.

The main reason Nascar is the number 1 motor sport in this country is bacause of brand identity. If you take that away you lose your fan base.

It will become just like Champ Car or IRL, few cars and fewer fans.

Putting Ford valve covers on a GM engine does not make it a Ford.

I totally agree Cranky, in fact I am not to happy with the COT. I would like to see a Ford NASCAR that one could actually buy at a dealership. A cup car that actually had all the body sculpturing that the mfg designed.

Just my .02 cents worth.

I too hate the COT! It looks too.... fast and the furious esk for me! Talk about provoking the civics to put those HUGE wings on their cars!!!!

We were talking about Richard petty's win record yesterday at work. Had a bit of a disagreement with a guy who isn't really into racing. He said Petty's record will be broken. I say... NO WAY IN HELL!!! The sport has become too restricted to become more competitive. If they did this... the sport is over...

Default nascar

has become a sunday afternoon highspeed tv show. France family runs it with iron hand, engines, transmissions, differ. car setup and shape is all nascar specked, so there is no more competition, just another tv show.I live next door to talladega track, and their library is good on racing history. But, heck, I still like to go see what happens. And watch the people-customers, very amusing, still get in fights over chevy vs ford, absolutely.Will-alabama

It's became all about money instead of competition. NASCAR gets so much money from racing these days. It's really pathetic...just like WWF wrestling.

How can you call an engine that has a distributor, wet manifold, carb and pushrods an "engine of tomorrow"? More like "engine of last century".

This engine is needed only because Toyota and Honda couldn't/wouldn't enter since they don't have any pushrod engines.

I'm really surprised there isn't a push to race Stanley Steamers to stem the complaints of greenies about the wanton waste of fuel used for racing.

Because Tech inspections would be waaaay to difficult in a sport like this!

Default It's already gone.......

I hate to be the one to break the news to you guys, but NASCAR is already gone. It's not about the cars and brand identity anymore. They've made it a driver's series vs a manufacturer thing. It's nothing more than WWF on wheels.

They try to convince themselves that we follow drivers vs the cars they drive, but they ignore the fans and their desires. Most people pick a favorite driver first for the type of car they drive. Do you think Dale Earnhardt Jr. would be so popular if he broke into NASCAR driving a Dodge, or a Toyota?? Fans might follow a driver when he switches teams, but they probably chose him in the first place by what brand of car he drives.

The cars no longer have any connection to actual assembly line vehicles. The bodies are not shaped like the production cars they resemble. There are front drive cars converted to rear drive. The engines they run are so far removed from reality that some manufacturers have never even produced a car with the engines they run (Toyota), and those that did produce one did it years and years ago.

The drivers they try to shine the light on today are really a bunch of faceless automatons who spew sponsor names and little else when interviewed (with the exception of Tony Stewart). Most of the current crop could walk around at the local mall and no one would recognize them.

So you disagree and think it's still real racing? Just look at the rules package. It changes by the freakin' week. In the good old days, NASCAR adjusted the rules in the off season. You built your cars over the winter to conform to a set of rules that would pretty much stay the same for the season. It was up to the teams to interpret the rules and build competitive cars. If the shape of the cars was not up to snuff, then the manufacturers went back to the drawing board and came up with a new car. Think Monte Carlo Aero Coupe. 1983 T-bird. Charger Daytona. Torino Talladega. Now they try to level the playing field during the season.

To fix it and turn their drop in TV ratings around, I suggest the following:

Freeze the rules at Daytona. If you're not competitive, there's always next year. We actually like for someone else to win once in a while.

Require the cars to have stock, production line bodies. We want to cheer for the brands. If the manufacturers want to play in NASCAR, then build a car for it.

Race in the rain. Wimps and baseball players run from the rain. Men race on.

End the practice of waving a yellow flag during the last few laps of every race to bunch up the cars. It's hokey and we all know it. Let a guy lap the field again. Racers are the best innovators we have. Let them do their stuff. The strong survive. The weak get left beside the road. Natural selection. Just let it work.

The COT's are built and sold by Nascar. Most all the chassis components have a chip/number, no more cheetin' or coming up with your own better design. The motors will soon be sealed with all the parts, chiped/ numbered. All this stuff is sold thu Nascar, more money for Nascar. Funny how all the drivers from the other racing series are running to nascar , like bugs to a zapper. But the fans keep eatin it up, buyin' Tshirts and the latest diecast car of the week. Never underestimate the stupidity of the American public.

I have to tell you, And I hope someone from Nascar reads this thread, that Nascar has managed to do what no wife or anyone else could do for over 43 years. They have made me lose interest and respect for it. I just do not care anymore. I go for a drive in the Cobra or wifes 57 T-Bird.
I hope everyone has a safe holiday.

I've been a fan of NASCAR for 30 years & must say, it's come a long way, not necessarily in the right direction though.

I didn't like the introduction of the restrictor plate, ever since then I think it's slowly been going in the wrong direction. Micromanaging by NASCAR, the constant rule changes (let'em race to the yellow), point system changes, the restrictor plate, the COT & now maybe the Engine of Tomorrow. You've got to be kidding me!

I'd love to hear Dale Earnhardt's take on this if he were still alive! No more drivers like him on the track except for maybe Tony Stewart.

I'll take the early days of NASCAR when the drivers were not afraid to put a bumper on somebody or settle their differences with other drivers out back behind the hauler. I'm glad I still have tapes of races from the 30 years ago that I can playback.

I never thought I would say it but the races today don't mean as much to me as they used to.

Wise up NASCAR!!

Randy

This is the exact reason that I can watch days of thunder OVER AND OVER!!! "he didnt bump you, he didn't slam you, he didn't nudge you, he rubbed you and rubbin' son.. is racin'!!"

Tony is the man! I love when he is clearly faster than the person in front of him and he just kind.. "rubs" the guy out of his way!

Big difference between Tony S. and Earnhardt.
Tony might be a better driver overall than Earnhardt was but Earnhardt could dish it out and also take it.(remember when Mayfield took out E at Pocono going for the checker)
Tony can dish it out but cries when somebody messes with him. Too bad great skills wasted on an asshole.

Last year at the Monterey Historics, Toyota had a big presence and a huge display including the upcoming Camary Cup Car. Also on display was one of the engines used in the Craftsman Truck Series (?). At first glance with the way it was dressed including penroof valve covers, it looked a lot like an FE with a lot of nicely done aluminum castings and a dry sump.

Don't know if Tony is a better driver overall than Dale, he was a tough act to follow.

I agree that Dale could take it better than Tony but I think Tony's whining has subsided somewhat in the past year or so. Too much whining going on in NASCAR too.

Just my 2 cents worth.

NASCAR, NHRA, all the racing has become all about the almighty dollar...back in the '60s you could put your "rod" together in the backyard or garage if you were lucky enough to have one and drive(that's rite drive) it to the local strip and have a ball all day long. Maybe spend $50-75 on it for what ever you broke to get ready for next Sunday. It was normally your only means of transportation so you had to fix it to get to school or job. Today you can spend 100 large and not be competive.
Maybe that is why we have the cars we have now...COBRA's..greatest icon of the 1960's. Drive em...fix em..and drive em some more...My wife doesn't understand why too much is still not enough.

NASCAR is now much more a show than a race. The drivers tend to be very well spoken and can mention all of the sponsors in a 30 second interview.

The cars and the rules are becoming a joke. First the cars: I do not believe that there is one single piece on any of these cars that can be found on a production automobile. They are no longer "STOCK CARS", period. They are spec race cars built for the Nextel Cup. They have stickers on them that indicate that they are a Chev or a Ford but they share absolutely nothing with the production cars.

Secondly the rules: there are so many stupid yellow flags every race that i can no longer stand to watch a full race. Then there is the rediculous lucky dog rule. If some one is a lap down, why in the name of racing should he be allowed to get back on the lead lap just be cause another ^%$@#! yellow flag comes out?

NASCAR is now a SHOW, plain and simple. This show has brightly coloured cars going round and round very quickly, until some of the big name teams require gasoline or a new set of tires, at which time a yellow flag comes out. Can't have pit stops when they are actually racing, that would upset the show.

Oh yea, one more thing. How can SPEED talk for hours and hours about NASCAR every day?

Wayne
