exhaust noise
Every two years it's a pain in the ass going through Delaware inspection and I’m barely over the decibel limit. Is there a product on the market or something that can be made, without a machine shop, to temporarily slip into the side pipes to make these people happy for ten minutes? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

It is possible to slip a reducer inside of the tip. One simple hole, and it will screw into place. Just like on the imports.

You could try something like. Cram it in to the end of the pipe for the inspection, then pull it out. |

I had another thought. A customer came in in an import with one of those cans on it. Claiming it was way to loud. It had the softest little purr to it. I asked him what he meant by loud, and then he showed me the 0000 steelwool stuffed up inside of the can. I hooked a piece of welding rod, and just pulled it all out. SIMPLE!

Yes, a bunch of steel wool stuffed in and held in place somehow will cut the noise level quite a bit.
Years ago, I got a 24 hour warning for noise with my Hi Po Mustang. I just stuck a couple of those VW exhaust extensions up the tail pipes and put a spot of brass weld on each one. The noise reduction was amazing but of course the car ran like crap until I passed the inspection and removed the exyensions.

I used a Vortex Cone in a turbocharged Harley. It had a megaphone pipe with no baffles. The turbo softened the note a little, but it was still loud. Can't say the cone did any good at all. It changed the tone a little at idle, but not during riding. 1 month after I installed it, I got a loud pipes ticket.

That's good to know! Thanks for sharing.
From what I have read in NJ rules/regs, there is no DB hard fast rule. It seems that the rule is you can't have open pipes. This just gets me that check mark. Could always stuff some muffler in front before the install.

The advertised reduction with the vortex cone is 1 to 3 dB and clarified by use of the word " typically "

Supertrapps were a very popular installation many years ago. 20 years ago we use to install them all the time, but they faded away. I think people got tired of adjusting the plates. They seemed like a good idea to me?
