The best way to tell if its a 427 is to see if it has screw in freeze plugs on the sides. The casting number would help to.

I am not sure what you are asking, there is no such animal as a cobra engine unless you mean a 427so or 428 or 289 from an original cobra, then I suppose you could call it that. I suspect that is a 390 with dress up, but check the engine codes to be sure.

Over the counter readily available valve covers and air cleaner don't mean squat as to what motor it might be. Could just as easily be an old dressed up 352 transplanted in a later model truck. Dual four barrel intake is a nice touch!
The casting numbers on the head should be readable, thats where I'd start, at least a clue.

What do I have?
If it is cross bolted then it's a 406 or 427. Cast numbers will not tell you everything about the inside of the motor. I checked the cast numbers on an old truck motor and thought I had a 428. I took the heads off and measured the bore and stroke. It was a 352.
A friend bought a 390 in a 1967 stationwagon. One day he noticed something different about the damper. He did a little checking and found the vin number had a Q code for the engine, 428! I bought the wagon from him for the motor.
You will not know until you tear it apart and measure it.
I have heard of people buying 427 or 428s from dealer to find out years later they had a 390.

If you have to ask... You'd know if it was something special if you heard it run, if you have to ask it likely isn't. You can by those valve covers polished for $150. and another $100 for the air cleaner.

Is it a F100, F150, or F250? If my old sales days serve me well, the 390 was available in the F250 up to 1975 but only with a 2BBL at least in California. The 302, and 360 were in the F100 & F150.

Well the reason I ask about the engine is because I know nothing about Ford products, I've been a GM guy my whole life and my dad had this truck given to him by a friend who had the truck willed to my dad.
What does cross bolted mean?
Yes it is a single carb double pumper Holly 850 CFM.

It looks like a 390 4v engine. Stock cast low riser intake.
Unless it was transplanted from another vehicle.
We did it all the time.
Used a 73 F-100 as a test mule.
Part # of the heads would help.
4v in the 70's were rare. The truck looks like it has a duraspark ignition.
What year and model is the truck and what is it's VIN.

Ok guys, thanks for the input. I guess I'm just gonna say the hell with it. Engine runs great, runs like hell idleing but when you get on it she runs like a raped date. I'm just going to assume its not a 427.
