Default 289 FIA owners: What's under the hood?

289 FIA owners, I'm curious what you put under the hood. The usual stuff: engine builder, fwhp, bhp, induction, heads, compression ratio, along with street drivability. Let's see the brag sheet.

1965 289 block stroked to 331 by Danbury Competition. Edelbrock Performer heads, 10:1 compression, Holley 670 carb, 391 HP, 360 ft-lbs at the flywheel with air filter and exhaust system installed. Runs great on 91 octane (will even run on 89), 21 mpg highway, 15 mpg city.

I wish I could brag. The original owner and builder put a 351W in it, which was supposed to be the 380hp Ford Motorsport crate motor. Unfortunately, it's more like a mid-70's LTD station wagon motor.

It's got GT40 iron heads, Performer RPM intake, 750 Holley, 290 cam, Mallory distributor, MSD 6AL ignition, I assume around 9.2:1 compression, and only musters about 280rwhp. It's very driveable and cruises around like a champ, isn't too loud, gets great MPG (especially with the 5-speed), but it's dog a$$ slow. I've only been able to get a best of 12.9 @ 103 quarter out of it, even though it's usually more in the 13.2 range. Just doesn't seem to pull like a Cobra should.

It's got too much carb, so I am going to step down to a 600 or 650 over the winter to see if that helps throttle response and overall performance. Future plans call for a stroked 351 with weber look-alike fuel injection. I'd like to have somewhere in the 450rwhp range.

BOSS 351 Cleveland, Aussie block, bored and stroked to 363 cubes; Carillo rods, BOSS heads, Forged pistons, BOSS crank, lifter bores bushed for solids, special camshaft ground for Webers, Canton road-race pan, 4 - 48 IDA Weber carburetors. A "big" small-block Ford engine; foot-boxes modified to accomodate free-flowing SS headers.



Lotsa fun with a "big" small block.

Ford 289 Engine, whit Holley carb.
But this will be changed with a Weber 48 IDA Carburetor during the next winter.

A whimpy 302 from a Torino. I doubt if it has 200 hp!!! It's still fun on the track but sounds like a stock station wagon. Hopefully a forged 331 in the near future.

Don't have the car any longer but there are pics of my 289 that was in my Kirkham FIA in my gallery. Also some pics of 347 with webers that was in my GT350R Replica and 289 with webers in my GTD GT40. Give you a few examples........

This is the type of info I was looking for. Especially those that are lamenting not getting enough power and wanting to go to a stroker with more HP & Torque.

I'm looking at my options for an engine. I've pretty much written off using the local builder, for the quote I got was more expensive than a Roush 342R! I'm comparing the cost/hp from a Ford Crate 302 to a KC 331 through to a Roush 342R. Big jump in ROI from a Ford crate to a KC 331. I'm thinking a Roush 342R would probably be less "streetable" than the KC 331. I've got a spreadsheet comparing these along with the added components cost to get them all on the same playing field, so to speak.

Another question: For those that moved from single four-barrel to 4-48 IDA Webers, how bad did the gas mileage get after the changeover? Or was there a change?

64 289 hipo (original over the counter sai comp modified block), 289 hipo heads (ported and polished by "valley head service" just like they did them in the 60s for sai), forged steel crank and rods, 48 ida webers and correct linkage (intake ported to match heads by same people), full roller valve train, spalding "flame thrower" ignition............does gas milage really matter?

It does when you just past a sign that read "next services 75 miles" and your gettin low on fuel! I also monitor my gas mileage as one indicator of when the engine is losing its tune.

347 with Iron Block and IDA's


If you want a 302 motor we have one for sale. It was pulled out of CSX 7012when the new motor was added. 302 crate motor had 1000 miles on it, Gessford went through it and it is perfect. e-mail Rick at CSX7012 at g mail .com
