Default Ford Racing performance

I'm looking at purchasing my 351 crate package through Ford racing performance. I'm interested in any feedback from anyone who uses their 351 package with 475 hp.Thanks

Lots of folks swear by their product. My 392/430hp ran great til I blew a head gasket, bent a rod and spun a bearing with 7200 miles on it (reason still unknown). Yes I was at a track racing (but 50psi oil and under 6k rpms). Those things happen.
For the same money as the Ford Racing motor, you can get a Keith Craft 410 stroker that will put out +/- 525hp.
Man O War has similar packages too.
Just a thought.

Sounds like you're looking at the Z head 392. I have the same engine as Madmiles which is the same as the 475hp but with GT40 heads (430hp). I love the engine. I have about 20,000 miles and no problems. Very well balanced performance engine for a Cobra. The Z head 392 is a lot of engine for a first time Cobra owner.

I also have the 392 with 430 hp and it runs very good and no problems with 3400 miles on it, I would love to have a Man of War 460 SB all aluminum with way to much horsepower but don't have an extra $15,000 laying around

I think the Ford crate engines are a good bang for the buck, I only wish they would sell them for a price like GM sells their crate engines.
From Jegs catalog,

GM 385 HP 4 bolt mains forged crank alum heads $4,599.

Ford 385 HP 2 bolt mains, non forged crank alum heads. $8,999

It ain't easy being a Ford guy.

STROKER $8500
351 WINDSOR BLOCK
FORGED STEEL CRANK
COMPETITION RODS
EDELBROCK PERFORMANCE RPM Aluminum Heads

351 CLEVELAND BLOCK
SPECIAL STROKER CRANK
COMPETITION RODS
351C PORTED & POLISHED HEADS

I have the 392/475 in my SPF. Uses oil, but runs good at 3300 miles. (Oil control rings most likely culprit). Demon 750 on engine now. Runs on pump gas 93. Idles at 850-900 and cruises at anything above 1700 RPM. Ran 12.0 @114 with a 1.80 60' on BFG Radial T/A's. Looking for more power now. Will look at the 514 FMS big block, should have put that in the car in the first place as it costs the same as the 475 HP Windsdor.

ford is coming out with some myster big block engine with a lot of hp. They had this advertised as coming soon. I also read it in a magazine Ford was testing an engine that was puting out about 800hp naturally asperated and said it could end up in future Ford cars. It's long due since Chevy has put out there 572R cubic inch putting upwards of 700hp

The 460 and 514 Ford Crate Motors from the past are no longer offered. You might find one in a warehouse, but chances are slim.

As Cobra Crazee said, they are coming out with a new 520 (that's the rumor) that's based on the 4 bolt main racing block. Price is supposed to be in the $9,000 to $11,000 range.

I got the last available 460 crate motor that they had on display at the SEMA show.

There has been a lot of talk about guys having problems with the 514 crate, and basically had to de-tune them to keep them together. No wonder Ford took them off the shelf and no longer offers them. Hope their new BB is thoroughly tested before offering it to the public this time.

Tom: I know a lot of guys with the 392 crate and like it very much. There were some oil issues with the early offerings but Ford seems to have solved that - at least in the 430HP version. The intake is pretty much a copy of the popular Vic Jr. and many of the guys I know have experienced a BIG HP/TQ increase by switching to AFR 185 or 205 heads. They said it really wakes the 392 up, adding between 70 and 90 HP.
You may want to give that a try first before going through the expense of buying a new engine and everything it takes to go from a SB to a BB in your SPF.

I love my 514 crate engine. I am approaching 1,000 hours on it - in a jet boat - and have had ZERO problems.

Just got my 460 Super Cobra Jet on the road and the performance is outstanding. I'm running a 750cfm Mighty Demon with a Torker II intake. It pulls through all the gears, meets every expectation and excellent tech support from Ford Racing.

I have a FRP 460 crate 550hp/540tq. I only have 200 smiles on it now. So far so good. Great power. And ford tech guy's have been great about the few small issues i've had. Guy who put my motor in forgot to put rocker cover baffles in which has been causing some leaks as well as improperly torqueing intake manifold. Best of luck
