Fire supression mounting

Any pros and cons as to where to mount a Fire Bottle fire supression unit? I was thinking of mounting the bottle in the trunk or under the dash above the transmission tunnel???

I have seen both at the track and they seem to work equally well. Normally those with two bottles or the larger ones mounted them in the trunk. Just have the activation pin where it is easy to get to. I kind of like the trunk mount as the way my dash was it was hard to get to the bottle to mount it on the transmission hump, and I had a larger bottle than would have fit under there.

Mount it in the trunk along the same axis as the wheelbase, behind the driver. Make sure the cable for activation is accessable while your strapped in tight, as I've seen a few that are not when the driver is strapped in. Two nozzle systems should have one pointed at the engine compartment fuel system (ie: carb and fuel line area), one under the dash pointed at the drivers compartment. Three nozzle you can add the third either to the passenger compartment, or the fuel tank and pick up area. Remember the whole idea is to provide the "driver" with the maximum protection and give him enough time to get out of the car if it should catch on fire. The car can alway be replaced, but your life cannot.

Trunk mounting is good and practical. I've got one nozzle in the engine compartment and two in the cockpit. Both are pointing down towards the feet so you get initial blast on the firewall, up under dash and then the blowback on the rest of you.

My activation handle is on the dash and within reach when I'm strapped in. I also have a small halon bottle between the seats.

Nothing burns faster than a fiberglass car......

I bought mine off Ebay from Race City. They have new and used parts from the NASCAR boys. Mine is made by Fire Bottle 5 lb with the DuPont equivilant of Halon. Paid $236 with shipping vs $399.00. You may want to consider a 10lb unit to cover all three areas. Mine is set up for the engine and driver / passanger compartment.

I have been told my both the fire extinguisher company from whom I purchased my Halon hand-held unit and knowledgeable friends that extinguishers containing Halon should be stored upright. Otherwise, the Halon corrodes the seal at the top of extinguisher, and the charge is lost. Just FYI!
