Default Clutch recommendations (FE/TKO)

I will be pulling my motor over the winter to replace a cracked oil pan. While it is out, I might as well make sure that I have the best clutch set-up as possible. I currently have a Ram 11" with a hydraulic TO bearing set up. My motor is a KC bulit Shelby BB putting out 630+ hp/tq connected to a TKO-600 with a .82 OD and a 3.31 rear.

What do folks recommend as the best clutch package for that combo? This is a street driven and street abused car. Not a racer, but certainly not pampered.

Anything else that I should tackle while the motor is out?

Thanks,

Lew,

Check your area and see if any of the racers have clutches made for them. I had a Kevlar clutch built for my 427 FE and I could not be happier. Pulled it out last spring after a year of street driving and about 1000 miles on several road courses and it looked brand new. Cost was about $120.00.

I'm running a 600 HP 482" FE built by Keith too and I went with his clutch recommendation, a Ram long style pressure plate w/a sintered iron disc. It's very streetable and has never slipped. My driving habits are similar to yours also. I'm running Mickey Thompson 315/35/17 ET Drag Radials on the car so I do load the clutch too. I'd make a phone call to Keith and see what he says..

Lew,

I have a setup that's similar to yours (engine, transmission). I am using a McLeod Street Twin, and have been very pleased with it.

Good luck.

I love the dual disks, they are the smoothest clutch and hold about 900hp, they have a real soft pedal too. jimig@standardtransmission.com

Lew,

First of all, you don't need to pull the engine to change the pan unless you just want to pull the engine. I had to pull my pan to change my gasket, which I recommend changing if you have one of the piece of crap cork gaskets. The fiber ones seem to work well. I have the McLeod 12in clutch and pressure plate. I'm very happy with both.
