Since I own a '56 ace that was "Cobraized" in the early '60s I guess I own a replica since it was not built by Shelby and is not an original Cobra. That may make my car the first replica built and maybe I should be collecting the replica royalties.

Acrually I kind of like 'reproduction', at the same time I wouldn't call a modern Shelby a replica.
Ahhh, but alas, even the term 'reproduction' can be a minefield. There is just no clear cut way to make a statement about the new C*bras. It all depends on where and when the question is being asked. At a stop light? At a car show? Even my answer on my replica (of an AC COB ) will depend on the who, where and when.

lets try to figure this out. back in the mid 90's shelby "finds" 50 incomplete 427 chassis, he decides to try and pull a fast one over on the cobra / car enthusiast public as a whole and complete these cars as "original" 60's cars, he got caught! he didn't decide to build these cars for the love of the car, it was the love of the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ now imagine shelby having control over the authentication & history of the cars within the saac or any other type of registry. who would or could actually believe what is written in said registry? look at all the con-artist that are out there right now trying to pass this or that "fake" car off as a legit "original" and some have tried to buy ($) thier cars that authentication / history. i think that it's in the best interest of the car enthusiasts everywhere and of any manufacture to have a unbias group / club like saac in control of these records it may be the only way that people can posibly gurantee the the history / authenticity of the car they own, want to puchase, selling, etc...(IMHO & i have no affiliation with saac or any other club)
* by the way my car is a "REPLICA" of the "original" 60's cobras, it doesn't matter how many "original" 60's parts i use to build it, it's still a "REPLICA"! *

Can you imagine what his FAMILY or Employees will be tempted to do when it comes to 'fudging' a Vin code or two years from now. If the extreme values continue to grow the temptation will be significant.

Hey Ron, great idea! I love steel cage matches.
Xlor8: Uh, yeah. I read it. I wrote it. Maybe you should read it again if you don't get it.
I'll make this real easy for all those that don't get it. Please refer to www.SAAC.com or maybe pick up the Current Team Shelby magazine. They speak very clearly on the issue and their position is very clear. I merely echo their position.
As far as I'm concerned SAAC and Team Shelby/SAI are the only real authorities on the issue. Its settled as far as I'm concerned. For those that don't agree, thats fine. You can continue the mental masturbation as to whehter the Continuation series is a "replica" or a "reproduction" or whether "genuine" is the same as "real" etc..Its a free country so continue on then.... but the facts and authority make it very clear. The CSX is legitmately a REAL Cobra newly manufactured by Shelby American who built and created the original series. I also find it rather coincidental that nearly every guy who wants to dump the Continuation series in the "replica" bin doesn't own a CSX. Hmmm. Interesting ain't it? Wonder why that is in most cases.
I'm sure that alot of non CSX owners would love to write a little mandatory script for CSX owners to recite when we are asked if our cars are "real" which I'm sure would include the word "replica" or "reproduction" in the description. However, unfortunately for them when someone asks if my car is "REAL" my answer is always as noted above..."Yes sir it is, its a new Continuation series Shelby Cobra". Its accurate, truthful and clear. And if you like that you'll love this...when asked if my car is a "replica" my answer is always "no". Why? Because its not. You guys can answer any way you would like about your car. I'll answer any way I'd like about mine, thank you very much. Did I say its a free country?
Thank you very much. I'm off to "crap" up another thread now...

With regard only to Shelby Cobras, would it be helpful to answer the question, "Is that a Cobra?", with... "Yep, but it is a new Shelby Cobra."
"The old ones were made in the early to middle sixties, but this is a new one, with some nice improvements (OR, if so, "It is made exactly like the old ones")." Etc.
Refering to them as old or new seems more simple and practical an answer. Anyway, it is what i do and people seem to understand right away. Nor would i be stretching the truth in any meaningful way.
Ps: Don't forget, Shelby isn't the only company/person that made either original cobras or "continuation" Cobras; according to both SAAC, FORD and Shelby, AC Cars Limited also made Cobras, just not Shelby Cobras.
Remember too that "all" 289 Cobras were called AC Cobras, NOT Shelby Cobras, though many many US States registered them many different ways, even as FORD 2 door roadsters.
Quite different than Shelby and FORD, AC Cars Limited continued building AC Cobras of various types and specifications for many years, long after the others stopped. They were made the same way, by mostly the same people, on the same equipment, mostly at the same factory (until the new one) and mostly with the same small dimentional errors and variances as the old ones. But, with better paint jobs.

At one time or another all of us get the question, "is it a real?".
99% of us, I have to believe, give the best answer possible. 99% of the people looking at the car probably say something like -- "damn - that is a cool car".
99% of the people visiting at the majority of car shows could give a rats a$$ if it is real, fake, original, replica, reproduction, or continuation. HOWEVER, 99% of the people know flatulation when they hear it coming back.
People will stop, admire, talk and enjoy a car more if they enjoy the whole interactive experience.
Who THE PHUCK cares. Let SAAC and Shelby have at it. Enjoy your friggin cars for what they are -- Loud, fast, smelly, gas guzzling, grin making, 4 wheels of fun. That applies to the CSX 4000 series as well as all replicas. Any Cobra looking car made after '70 are meant for driving.

I would agree What'sa has a good suggestion. The "new" Shelby Cobras are not 1965, '66, or '67 cars. They are 2002, 2003 etc. cars built to look like the cars of the '60's

I love these threads, almost like a train wreck, but much better. No one really gets hurt, at least physically. Eventually someone always bangs cars made in Poland, or it's Las Vegas versus Mexico versus South Africa, early versus late, CSX versus SPF versus Kirkham. Somehow ERA's and FFR's get involved too.
There's gotta be an over/under on these discussions every year.if not, there should be. Has anyone ever changed their mind?

Evan I don't need to read it again. It's obvious to everyone but you that you have stuck your foot in your mouth.
Whatsa and A-Snake have a good suggestion for an appropriate response for any CSX4K owner that's not a self absorbed weenie.
You should try it sometime and maybe people would have a better impression of you.

Evan, you are "overcompensating" again! Remember what your "shrink" said. Oops, pardon the pun.
I'm going to that party at Shelby American Collection tonight. Think this topic (SAAC / Shelby ) will be discussed ? I bet so.

People that go to car shows only want to see bling.
I built a Cobra replica for me to enjoy.
An original would be to hard to enjoy because of the worry factor.
I love making milk runs in my load two seater roadster.
All this BS is is not fun.
Evan is so easy to bait and you guys should be ashamed.
Now Jamie go find Chaplins parts to his car you lost so he can be smiling again.
