Insurance cancellations
I took this off another site, I guess insurance companies are watching! So my question... why would htey cancel insurance on these grounds? He hasn't done anythign wrong, didn't expect coverage while racing, and SCCA has their own liability... so why?
Quote:
PLEASE READ: WARNING TO AUTOCROSSERS or other weekend racers
Hey guys and girls thought I would share with you what happened to
me yesterday.
I returned an urgent call to my insurance company (Geico) and they
informed me that as of the end of the month my insurance policy is
being cancelled. Why? I haven't had an accident. No moving
violations in several years.
The answer:
"We have found out that you have participated in time trial events."
I tried to reason with the lady, and explain to her that I haven't
even autocrossed with my Subaru (the car I have insured with them)
and that the SCCA has their own liability insurance for their
events. She told me it didn't matter there was nothing she could do
and that it was final as of 12:01 AM Jan. 28 2008 I would no longer
be covered.
I guess they searched results on the internet and found my name. I
have heard of this being a problem with warranties in the past but
after 4 years of autocrossing with my other company (Liberty Mutual)
I had never had a problem.
So I am writing here to warn all of you that if you have Geico,
cancel your policy now. They do not respect us for what we do, and
therefore I believe do not deserve a single dime from anyone.
I can see why they might hesitate with this issue as some people
can't leave it on the track, but the vast majority of autocrossers
are responsible enough to not do this. If anything we are lowering
the accident rate through improving our driving skills

Maybe they have had some people report claims on accidents while racing. Some insurance companys have a no racing clause in all of their policys on street registered vehicles. If it is strictly a non street registered car and was used for racing only, I guess you could have a seperate policy on that car only for medical coverage but I do not know ifthey even have that.

Well that's the thing he is having problems with I guess. Gieco cancelled him which is where he has his WRX insured. His autoX car is not even insured through gieco! It's insured through Liberty Mutual.
Do they just assume that because he is racing, he is aggressive or what?

This whole thing sounds strange. I have never really heard of an "Insurance Company" calling someone to tell them they are canceling them, they just do it. They have to give legal notice of cancellation which is determined by the State Department of Insurance. I would really question if Liberty Mutual even knows he is using the vehicle for auto cross he states he has insured with them. Most policies, unless specifically designed, will not cover any track type exposure. Obtaining track coverage is not an easy thing with most Companies. I have also never heard of a Company having personnel to sit and search the Internet looking for people that auto cross, race or anything else along this line. That makes the least amount of sense to me in the whole thing.

If in fact the cancellation is legit, the reason they would do it is even though the SCCA has it's own insurance policy, if you were involved in a serious accident, the injured party is going to try and sue you and that would leave GEKKO directly in the liability loop.
They obviously have a "no racing" clause in their policies and you were violating their rules. Just choose someone else to insure your car.
By the way, what car were you racing, if not the Subaru?

A friend of mine had a rate increase with Geico
He was 60 years old when his wife died.
When he renewed his insurance,Geico increased his rate to single status retroactive to the date she died.
He changed insurance policies

Well, after chatting with Robbin thorugh email, we've pretty much come to the conclusion that this guy probably isn't telling all. It just doesn't make sense.
About the best idea that could come up is htat Geico cancelled him because he holds insurance with Liberty. He got upset about it and tried to wreck geico for it?
The biggest thing that makes no sense is that Geico cancelled him on a car that he isn't using for racing. I believe his autox car is a camaro, but I am not sure.

I have probably been wrong all these years but I always interpreted the
no racing clause as meaning if you wrecked it doing any kind of racing that
you were not covered and they wouldn't give you a dime for your car.
I do have Geiko on several cars and so far have been pleased with their
services and price. My Cobra is with a different insurer because they don't
insure the Cobras - at least not in Hawaii. I don't race anything, just try
to dodge the idiots here.

Two years ago I was turned down for life insurance when an internet search (they did) revealed I was doing some road racing. Nothing's private anymore.

Sorta figured that...sounded like complete and "udder" bullsh!t. After autocrossing for three freeking decades, never heard of anyone being cancelled by any company for engaging in it using a car other than one insured. Doesn't provide sufficient cause to argue breach of contract.
Just step back and think about it for a moment...would any insurance company refuse to insure Hamilton's everyday driver because he happens to drive around Monte Carlo in something else once a year?
As we've seen here on these pages many times...there's always the story behind the story.

And if that isn't enough to scare you-they are the most fined insurance company in the country for "deceptive practices".Only recently they were allowed back into Az.

Oh hey...if you're using the car they're insuring in a demolition derby, they'll have you by the left and the right one.

Do not recall the specific source, but mentioned in an article was that insurance companies were using credit reports and background checks with the initial application and renewals in determining the risk of providing insurance .
Correct or ?
