Default Car and Driver magazine on Carroll Shelby

Greetings Folks;

Car and Driver has an article in the March issue entitled "Snake Oil Never Sleeps" ( written by Mr. Steven Cole Smith). You've all seen the recent antics between Shelby Inc and SAAC, etc -- the article talks about that and more.

The author of the piece says:

"I hereby proclaim that in the future, when we refer to our chicken farmer from Texas, we'll spell it like this: $helby."

Haven't read the article, but from the posted quote, I believe it confirms what I've been told and suspected...

Was the article in reference to the Shelby Foundation giving less than 1% of assets away in the years 2002 - 2005?

Interesting article. In fairness the quote you have highlighted was actually a quote of a poster on the SACC forum and not the author/reporter.

Jay;

May be -- It was in "quotes" on the page that had the article I referenced. If that IS from the SAAC forum, I'm pleased that they're getting the appropriate credit. Any of us can certainly understand the sentiment.

"...the strangest headline Shelby made in 2007 involved his pissing match with the club that has, since 1975, ostensibly worked the hardest to keep his name in the headlines: the Shelby American Automobile Club."

Here's a reprint of the article... (click the small pic for a full page copy)

Curt;

They did in fact mention the rather dismal rate of disbursement from the Shelby Foundation. I'm guilty of contributing to Carrol's delinquency by contributing to the foundation last year. It made me feel bad once I saw how little actually goes to help any kids. Live and learn.

But, you know what? I sure love my cobra!

He is simply protecting his legacy. I am somewhat confused on exactly what he wants the legacy to be though. If anyone knows please enlighten me. I love my AC replica (Classic Roadster) too. She bears no badging relating to a Snake, 427, 289, FIA, etc.

How ironic, Shelby wanted people to stop using the Cobra emblem on there replicas. In protest I got as many "Cobra" emblems, stickers and stuff to place all over my car as I could find!

Now, in protest, I must remove the stuff so as not to be to closely aligned with him during the current war. Some legacy indeed...

The good news: Be proud of your ride for what it is, not for what it might pretend to be. If it's a Classic Roadster, thats cool. I love my old Excalibur and am thrilled with my ERA, I enjoy my friends hard work on his FFR, good looking machine and he's rightfully proud of it. Bring 'em on! Maybe I'll put some ERA badges and emblems on mine!

Ya gotta wonder with the list of items mentioned in that article how much ol' CS actually spends on Lawyers and such. Must eat into his profits pretty deep.

Not to offend any cobra folks that may be lawyers (the fact you have a cobra automatically makes you a fine, upstanding individual), but the fact is, lawyers get paid to litigate. It just might be that Shelby Inc. has a few too many on retainer.

Someone mention that Mr. S has a right to protect his legacy. OK, maybe so -- I won't dispute that we're entitled to say what our name goes on. But I'm wondering what that "legacy" would have been today without the direct efforts of SAAC, and an enduring group of people willing to spend a significant amount of money to put a cobra on the street.

People are talking about taking the "Shelby" and "cobra" badging off of their cars in protest. Another long-time owner refered to his car as an "AC replica". Why? It all seems to point back to the destructive activities of Shelby Inc. It's as if they're only concerned with drawing off as much profit as possible in the short term, with no concern for the real "legacy" -- the lasting popularity of the cars.

Damn, I hate this.

Ex, I thought Ford owns the cobra name.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

Yup FORD does own the Cobra name, of course Shelby treats it like it is his and Ford generally looks the other way. It's a sweet heart deal all around.

So what is your replica? An AC Cobra? Shelby Cobra? Ford Cobra? Or some combination thereof? Mines an ERA.

Thank you for posting a copy of the column.

One question, and please understand I am no expert on this, but if Club Cobra is posting a copy of the column on their web site, wondering if Car & Driver or the column's author needs authorize it.

Again, only asking. Would not want to see any nasties start flying...
