Default Near miss in the garage

So I took the car out of the garage the other day. Hit the button on the garage opener, shut the garage door and went for a spin. When I got home I hit the garage door opener button and the garage door went up about 1 foot and then I heard a big bang.
The garage door opener broke its mounting brackets and came crashing to the floor. Guys, this is right where the car sits that this thing came down.
Car has been parked under it for the last two years and I open and close the garage door several times every day. The Cobra Gods had been watching out for my little Cobra!
It looks as though the mounting brackets holding the opener up had gave up the ghost. I never noticed any additional movement in the opener.
I now have new mounting brackets and also safety wire holding up the garage door opener.

Mark,

You were indeed fortunate. I have had a loud pop in my door when I open it on cold mornings and thought that maybe my motor was coming loose from the mounting. But it is solid and the pop s from somewhere up in front near the spring. So far it just does it once and I haven't been able to find out exactly what it is so I can lube it.

Ron

Good news, Bad news. The repercutions of the garage door opener falling on the Cobra and smashing it's imprint into your car would be devastating and the bitter memory would have lasted a lifetime. It's a glorious thing when chit happens and it works in our favor. That's what I call a "Happy Ending".

You are a fortunate individual.

Ron: I heard a loud pop on mine too...the coil spring let go about a week later...fortunately it is set up with a safety cable to keep in from flying across the garage or worse yet downward to the Cobra..got it replaced and did the other side as insurance issue.
Ck your springs!!!!

Glad to here it didn't hit the car. My daughter called me at work some three weeks ago and said that the garage door wouldn't go up.The door was old and I managed to get under it to see what happened. I decided to get the door replaced and when the day came to install I backed the Cobra out and ran over something...the spring that shot across the garage and hit the back wall and dropped staight down to the floor. My car was parked up tight to the wall for the winter about a foot and a half away and not a scratch! I just about dropped to my knees in thanks.

Oh man, that could have been horrible. every time i open my garage door i am so afraid its going to somehow fall or drop a part onto my car, it did pop out of one of the tracks before, with my Thunderbird under it but it didn't fall completely off, thank god.
