This would be an ideal project for the Kirkhams with theiir CNC facilities, or in Carbon fiber.

I'm fairly certain that Ford Motor Sports makes this same air filter assembly in a dual fours configuration. I'm just not sure for what manifold and carb combos it fits. Sure you can find out. The drop base may a bit more challenging. Just one of those things you gotta try. That's the joy of fabricating. . . .

Tom Wells... I wish the 4 " K&N would work but 3 1/2" is the max filter height that will fit under my hood. 1cobrat... I wish that filter would work but too long and too wide. Anyone know another manf. that has custom size filters? Thanks Berm

K&N will custom make the height you need...

Scufty, that looks like a pretty good installation, with the "banjo" style larger area over the carb allowing the air flow to slow down and the pressure at the carb to increase.
If that is 3" pipe between the hat and the K&N filter, the airflow (at 850 CFM flow into the engine) would theoretically be traveling just under 200 MPH...that sounds like a bit too fast for minimal restriction of the air flow. Maybe you could measure the pressure drop with a vacuum gage by installing a tubing fitting near the rubber coupling. At those air flow speeds there might be some additional pressure drop from a venturi effect.

Here's another version that will work on a Superformance. More so for folks that don't have welding equipment or access to same (and skills to use them, people like me!). Took a 15" oval air cleaner bought on eBay with its no-brand 2" washable element. Had the base/riser milled off by a local machine shop. Then I drilled two 1.25" holes to clear the float bowl adjustment screws. I added rubber grommets (for a valve cover breather) to isolate them and eliminate all vibration.

Running an Edelbrock RPM intake with a 1" spacer, and I still have at least 0.5" clearance at the top edges.

It's not a traditional Cobra filter but I picked this oval aircleaner up from Summit. They do a longer version too. The advantage is the airflow through the top. Combining this style of filter with a dropped base might not restrict your airflow so much.

Cheers
