Welding on a diff tube...??

I am in the process of beefing up my brackets that are welded to my axel tube, somewhere I remember about scale forming inside the tube from the heat and ruining bearings and such . What do you think? the diff is already in the car and filled with gear oil.

It is quite possible that the heat induced from the welding will cause scale to form and flake from the inner surface of the tube. As far as welding on the tubes with oil in assembled differential I would err on the side of caution. It is also possible that the tube will "Pull" and require some type of straightening.

thanks Rick I just need to beef it up I might try to keep a wet towel handy and douse it regulary. I see people all the time welding like crazy on those things but I have too much into it to mess it up.[i] dont know where it was but I read something about scale forming ? maybe a call to currie is in order.

There is no way to prevent it from forming, short of grinding the surface being welded. The scale is formed when the steel plate is made and when the tubes are rolled and seam welded. Suggest short welds beads of (1") max and let it cool, then go at it again. Wet towels are a good idea.

Don't worry about it..

Everything in the differential/axle tubes is splash lubricated (or a sealed bearing). Small amounts of carbon flaking are just going to fall, sink in the rear lube and lay there for all eternity.. (or till you change your oil .. if .. they even washed down to the center section) Even if the carbon got in a bearing/gear it would disintegrate and wash out with the oil.. Weld those puppies and keep on gettin' it!
