Stiff clutch

I have a mechanical clutch in my cobra and its extremly stiff especially at the bottom. I believe its a mustange typeearly ninties.What can I do to loosen it up?

Yes it is cable driven.One fellow suggested that it may pinched. This car is a cmc built in 1992 and has 9000 miles on it.

Is this car new to you or did it just start happening?

I purchaed the car last spring and found it to be stiff right from the start. I thought maybe that was the nature of the beast.I have put on about 900 miles since I bought it. Incidentally its a 302 with a borgwarner 5 speed if that helps.

If the cable doesn't have any sharp bends in it and the quadrant is in good shape, I'd say it's just a function of what pressure plate you're using.

I just converted my stiff clutch to a hydraulic setup after breaking the cable in only 10K miles. It’s only about half the pedal effort now.

Could it be that the cable sheath has been heated and is tweeked. Maybe replace the cable and sheath.

Start by lubing the cable. Go to a motorcycle store and buy a spray can of Chain and Cable lube. Disconnect either end of the cable, and clamp it to the hood. I prefer to disconnect the pedal end, so excess lube fall on the ground and not on the carpeting. Spray the lube into the cable sheath. Do it a number of times to ensure it gets lubed well. Let it sit like that overnight so the lube will flow to the other end of the cable. Reassemble.

If that doesn't work, consider replacing the cable.

From my motocross days - fill up a balloon, or a "pregnancy preventer", with a appropriate lubricant, lash it tightly to the low end of the cable, and squeeze until it comes out at the top. Cyclo make a good quality silicon lube for nylon lined cable sheaths, warm wheel bearing grease to almost liquid for non-lined sheaths.
