Default crate engines

Question i've been wondering about since I'm not familiar with crate engines.
Since the emission requirement is based on the engine block, are the blocks in crate engines from '65 so they would be exempt from emission requirements?
Or,are blocks in crate engines newly manufactured?
For a Roush engine,is the manufacture date somewhere in the engine serial number?

Depends on the engine. FE blocks will be date stamped somewhere in the 60's; since none have been made since then. Small blocks generally will be newer, because newer blocks are easier to find in good condition.

Check the wording in your state law. Here in CO, the wording is "the year the engine represents". Even though I have a brand new Dart block, the engine represents a '65. So it would get smogged as a '65. So read the law carefully, and discuss it with a state smog inspector.

360 FE's were put into pickups until the later 70's. My 105 "mirror" block is a 1976 block from a Ford truck. It's got the heavier main webs and thick cylinder walls. Although I'll only go .030 overbore on it, it sonic checks good to a 428 bore if I wanted.
Also, there are plenty of FE service blocks out there with no date code at all - just a blank oval pad where the date code would normally be.
