Default Alternator problem?

The alternator wasn't charging the battery so I took a close look at the alternator and discovered that the white power wire was melted at the solder joint to the connector. What do I need to look for as to a possible cause? I'm taking the alternator to NAPA to have it checked in the AM and will buy a heavier duty connector (maybe it had cracked and caused a short). I'll also follow the wire to the extent possible to see if it has shorted somewhere. Any other thoughts? I'm also concerned that the Autolite voltage regulator could have been damaged. Any help is appreciated.

What type of alternator? I believe that the Ford 2G has a long history of this. I went with a Delco so I wouldn't have any problems.

Hi Double,
I never did get my externally regulated alt. to work on my E.M.
Last year I put a a single wire unit and have not had a single problem since.
Simple is better for electrical idiots like me.

Electrical failures occur at their weakest points, especially in DC circuits. I have a single wire alternator as well, never had a problem.

Well, what works best for me is to take both alt. and reg. to a auto electric rebuild shop. They will check it and repair it for less, and it will be the best product .

It turned out that a coil blew in the regulator. Everything is good now.

But the question is why did regulator coil fail?? Did you get the alternator tested?

I took the alternator to NAPA and it tested "Good". That left the regulator since the batteries still weren't recieving a charge. Replaced it and all's well. The regulator was an Autocraft as per the original and simply shorted out the best we can tell.

I was going to ask if you were sure the regulator was good, but you have it taken care of. The wire melted because of too much current going through it. In a situation like that, the wire will usually burn completely through before the alternator goes bad.

Double, they make a Solid state unit now. Looks the same, but is a bit more reliable.

I switched from the wire-wound unit to the SS unit a while ago...no problems.
