Default Oil Cooler Problem

I'm running a B&M trans cooler as an oil cooler (model 74265), bolted to the grill opening. Every 12-18 months, I get a crack in the cooler and lose alot of oil. The only reason I can come up with is stress when I hit bumps on the road and there's no give as the bracket holding it is metal. I'm thinking of using a rubber mount under the metal bracket.

Anyone have any experience with this or other solutions to this problem?

Thanks,

Ron

Ron,

I used a regular oil cooler for many years and never had a problem. Are you sure that the transmission oil cooler is standing up to the pressure of your engine oil as it wasn't designed to be used for the thicker oil. Or at least that is what I was told. One of mine was bolted in solid and the other had rubber in the brackets.

My Mocal is 23 years old, it is backed up by a frame bracket and has never failed in service.

where are you getting a leak? if it is up by the fittings the lines could be putting stress on it if its in the core you might be torquing it when you drive.

depending on tranny, a transmission puts out out more psi than an engine oil pump.

Thanks for the feedback. I've talked to B&M, who manufactures the cooler and they state they've had these on off road vehicles and have had no problems with the vibrations. They also state that the oil pressure is not a problem.

I'll try mounting a new one with a rubber base and see what happens.

Thanks,

Ron
