Bill,
That was a GT40, not a coupe. The build had to cost at least $120, so that was a bargain! A SPF coupe two years ago in WPB went for $270k!

Did you ever notice how many of the buyers look "unhappy" when they are signing off on their purchase? Is it instant buyer's remorse? Is it the "I've got more money than you do pissin' contest" thing? You wonder if they really know what they are buying! Poker faces, sour pusses....they should be happy! Is it the booze?

Many times it's because they just bought back their own car because it didn't reach the price they wanted and now they have to pay a 20% buyers/sellers fee on top of the consignment fee of $600 - $1200, depending on when the car went through the auction.

Well, yes it did, and no, it did not. The car in question (the one signed by Brock Yates and Hawked by olde CS himself at the auction) did indeed gavel at 270K, but to date, we have yet to see who actually bought it from either the skybox, or the pulpit. Rumor has it that Mr "J" himself is the owner and was bidding against himself, but I have no documentation to prove that allegation at this time. Of course I was there and did note two people who were bidding on it actively until it reached 138.5K, where they both dropped out as contending bidders. Once, twice, and all of a sudden the bidding picks back up but without a glance as to just who was bidding against who (not a phone bidder either as those are hawked as well over the speaker system against the audience to induce a live and in person counter bid whenever possible)........

As for the last coupe to go over the block, let's just say that in it's second year in a row, it failed to meet the sellers expectations (first year it did not hit 100K and was pulled from the auction pulpit and marked as sold, yet the same seller was back with the same car last year and while it did actually sell (I know the buyer), it did not reach even that 80K mark while on the stage and under the hotlights.

Bill S.

PS: The same things happened to the reproduction/continuation GT500E's at the BJ event....Someone bidding to "set the market price", which of course induced enough people to put down 100K deposits on more of them with CS leading the way. Funny thing is, that those cars all ended up being back at Unique and for sale within two weeks of the BJ WPB affair.........Let the buyer/bidders beware...............

Bill,
I think you mean Peter Brock, not Brock Yates... I thought the "Sebring Winner Recreation" was bought by the guy who owns the museum in Colorado (where he owns the whole town), but don't remember for sure... BJ is not a shot at reality and I know I would not come close to getting my investment back if I were to sell the car on ebay or anywhere else today. Glad I bought it to drive instead of as an investment!

Default My thoughts

I saw that as well and was also surprised but then I got to thinking. BJ is into selling correct #'s matching muscle cars. They go for very high numbers. That is where BJ makes their $$$$$$. Any other cars, clones, mismatched numbers, wrong engine or trans seems to take a bath. Why? I think BJ wants to keep the market for exact cars very high and make big bucks. 15 years ago, you couldn't give a correct matching muscle car away. BJ found a market of upcoming baby boomers (like myself) who back then, could not afford those cars or were just a bit too young to buy. (In 1967 I was 13). I have a beautiful ERA cobra with a SO 427 and every option. I love the car. Would it do well on BJ. Absolutely not! Probably lucky if I got 35-40K if I were to sell on BJ. Do you notice how quick the gavel goes down on these cars? In 5-6 call outs! I have seen them hold back cars that they thought were too low and hold the cars for 15-25 call outs. Like a beautiful Buick GS 455 with rare 4 speed. Was holding at around 70K. They held the car back thinking they could get more> went for over 110K. I have never seen them do that with a replica or an incorrect car. They have an excellent marketing ploy and I congratulate them for that! Don't be fooled.

I flicked on the Tivo last night and speed-balled through this episode. Wow! That Kirkham was actually a pretty car on TV and well bought for that price, no matter what mechanical condition it may have been in.

There was also a '68 Z-28, matching numbers car and nicely restored, that only got $48K...another well bought car. The '71 hemi convertible Challenger clone that sold for $49K started life as a 318 Coupe. It was back-halved for the convertible (grafted in from another car), but the hemi underneath was a date-coded '66-67 block. It had some body gap issues where the doors met the rear quarters, but for someone that doesn't care about authenticity I supposed it sold for what it's worth. You couldn't have one built today for that. There was also a nice, black '39 coupe that sold for under $50K...a different sort of car but was presented well.

Good thing I wasn't at that auction with $250K burning in my pocket...I would have easily bought 3-4 cars.

A friend of mine who was there thinks it did change hands, but that the car was very very rough.

His car was the red ff that sold for $50 and it was a nice car...Oh well
