Allan,

While I was not there this year I did hear from several friends that the car had that "I was beat on and now it's time to get out before something else breaks" look about it . Buyer may or may not be happy with it once he gets it home and finds out just what needs to be rebuilt on it already, but again, since I did not see it (or bid on it) up close and personal, what would I know

I've seen a lot of cars sold at this auction "under market." Relative to recent auctions, it's definitely a buyer's market for certain cars (i.e. '70 Challenger convertible w/Hemi - clone car - only sold for something like $55K or so....clone or not that was an easy $100K car two years ago).

For some reason the front fender opening area looks like it has a flat spot kinda... maybe it's just the way the sun is shining on it right there. Doesn't look like it's been beat... but this picture could have been taken on it's arrival. Nice looking car!

Do you guys really someone let it go for that? Are there always no reserve at BJ? Perhaps the owner bought it back

There was also the SPF GT40 that went for $80k. Another OUCH! At least $120 in the car. That had to suck!

For some reason the SPF coupes do not do well in WPB, can't quite place why, but that is two for two and two years running to boot.

Default Kmp

I paid 59,000 for KMP 003 18 months ago. The market was much hotter than now and sold for 75K all the market would bear 12 months ago.

Well, as I said did it really chage hands? Do we know for sure? Sportworthy, you bought a running KMS 003 for 59,000? Are you serious? That is dirt cheap! I'm paying $57,000 for my kit!!!!!!!!

The market will travel up and down on all these cars. Cobras have a limited audience and like it or not are recreations of the original which have a specific number available. Replicas are merely worth the sum of their total parts. In other words cost of building, some get more from their ability to entice i.e. Webers, era correctness, or creature comforts like top and side curtains. If manufacturers continue to flood the market in conjunction with streamlining their abilities prices will continue to drop.

Look at CSX glass car rollers for example 50k, once a factory is set up building it becomes easier to accommodate price adjustments. It will be like anything else the cream will flow to the top and the rest will belly up. CSX, KMS, ERA, Unique, and SPF should have staying power as they have built brand recognized type replicas. The rest will need to prove themselves or face difficult situations.

Auctions like BJ without reserves will either provide some great deals or they will scare away sellers of Cobras as prices are soft. I would never consider selling at an auction w/o reserve, too many variables in that sale for me. With BJ last outing selling CSX glass cars at 65-70k hard to compete. Buy them to enjoy and use caution as an investment.

Here is an older ERA for 37,500 with FE: Tough to beat that!

Was that Spanky choking, or the seller's "death crackle" when the hammer went down on the GT40? Maybe the shine is starting to wear off on BJ...time to show the speculators the door and allow the true enthusiasts back in!

Everything goes in cycles. Corvettes were crazy 3 years ago and then cooled off when the Hemi cars went crazy. Then it was anything with a Shelby badge. Now the Corvettes are making a comeback. Some were sold at record highs this week-end.

Cobras have always had an odd market at Barrett Jackson. High end replicas and 4000 cars don't bring good numbers, yet lower end brands sell for double what they would normally be worth.

Even originals don't bring good money, other than the Super Snake.

People don't "know" much about Cobras. Everyone knows what a Hemi cuda is, so that will always sell well. But most car enthusiasts don't know anything about Cobras, especially if it's not an original, so they are less apt to spend big bucks on one, spur of the moment.
