I don't think you can count gas because regardless of what car you buy you will use gas. Interest rates are pretty low now; $30 in the bank is gonna make you about $50 bucks a month. You do have to maintain the car but if it's a weekend toy there's not much maintenance except cleaning. Maybe the occasional part here or there. Oh yeah, Ebay will cost you about $100 bucks...I know I just had my car on ebay last month.

No matter how you look at it these cars are inexpensive to own. Try to buy a Ferari, register it, and insure it for a year for less than $500...Good luck. Same goes for any car of this caliber. This is why replica cobras appeal to me.

If you buy for $30k and sell for a few though less you are still ahead. These cars cost $300+ per day to rent and I keep one in my garage for much less than that.

Lets see $423/12 = $36 per month, + Gas which is about $100 per month for me. That's $136...call it $150. Add to that the opportunity cost of keeping $30k in the bank ($50...before tax) and your at $200. Then say you lose $2k in value. $2k/12 = $167 per month depreciation. Total it up and it costs you $367 a month for me to drive my cobra. Compare that to $300+ per day to rent one. I'd say its not a bad way to spend money. And, if you can sell for more than what you paid, you might be lucky enough to drive around in a cobra for next to nothing...ignoring the fact that money depreciates over time.
Your point on taxes depends on the state. In California and a good number of other states, they are not (legally) 40 year old cars, and taxes will be charged based on the purchase price (or build costs).

Always risky to generalize given how spread out our membership is.

Yet another reason why California sucks....Ok, I'll keep my mouth shut. I was under the assumption you could buy a used car anywhere from a private seller without paying taxes....I guess not. Either way, you probably get the point. These cars are not that expensive to own/maintain and it is unlikely you will lose $10k if you do your homework.....and not live in California...lol. The gas prices alone in Cali should be reason enough not to buy cobra IMO.

The game of finding a loop hole on taxes is just about gone. I know when I walk into the courthouse and see Class c felony and not to exceed 10years in jail it spooks me. If they go after all our famous movie stars, ceo's they will go after you.

Pretty simple math if you ask me, or anyone with an education.
I will note that you separate yourself from "anyone with an education." That saves me from having to do so. Thanks.

Again, you're in the wrong argument ... as anyone with an education would have already figured out. But I'm going to go ahead and indulge your silliness with a simple comparison:

A Cobra, purchased for $45,000 and sold five years later is sold for $45,000. Cost of ownership: $0.00

A Corvette, purchased for $45,000 and sold five years later is sold for $17,500. Cost of ownership: $27,500.

Both cars require title, tax, tags and gas. Those aren't included, as they're irrelevant to the conversation and would have to be paid on either car.

Nope. An argument 'assumes' nothing, nor are there only two sides, nor are the 'potentially valid sides.' An argument is a discussion with two or more opposing points of view.

Your pal,
Meat.

Can you please wake me up when you guys start talking about elasticity and inelasticity of money as well as employing a discounted cash flow model as it realtes to Cobra ownership.

Most people lose money on cars, the others just lie about it.

Pat,

As long as he has someone to respond to him he will continue to post as he gets off on the sheer conflict. Right or wrong it's his way of expression and release.......Then again that is what got him banned elsewhere and was also the downfall of his friends successful forum The really sad part about all of it is that he will never admit to it.

I always wondered why he was kicked off some other sites, it is obvious now. Cost of ownership zero for a cobra? right. Was he not the guy that was trying to rebuild some burned up POS a few years back? Owning that piece of crap definitly makes him an expert on cobras and apparently boats and planes too. I cannot for the life of me tell why he keeps bringing up this cobra to corvette comparison. He figures that if one is a terrible investment, then the other must somehow be a good investment since you lose less money. Unless he works for Bear Stearns, we can assume he is not a financial officer. Pat is correct, you are an annoying little pest.

he might want to check out the link below, after reviewing the top 15 or so cars it is obvious the owners are ASKING less than they have in them, unless the motors and trannys were free as well as labor. Why doesn't he talk to those guys and get their take on cobra investments?

Might be some truth in that gem. I liken it to Vegas. Every once in awhile someone DOES make some money, even 'hit's the jackpot'. These reported good fortunes keep the rest of us 'hopeful'. With some being SO hopeful the car becomes an 'investment'.

An odd series of statements. As far as I know, I'm not banned on any Cobra forum. And the downfall of the Senior's forum is directly attributable to Dave Smith from FFR.

Your pal,
Meat.

Cripes...this thread is lost.

Put it back on track ASAP or it'll fade away.
Reminder: " What's the best way to sell a Cobra now?"

thanks

One of our best friends works for Fleetwood and they are laying off people and downsizing from 5 to 2 buildings. They are also trying to sell off part of the 40 acres their complex is on. They are one of the big boys, so I don't know who you are reffering to with respect to RV's.

As far as boats, I have owned an Eliminator, two DCB's, a Cigarette and a Skater over the past 8 years. They ranged from 100-500k. I am very well connected in the high performance boating community (which includes a very wealthy guy in your neck of the woods that owns a large boat company) and the industry is not doing well right now. They made a killing the past 5 years with everone pulling money off their homes, and now that money has dried up.

Boat Market is sooooffffttt. Worst then homes. I have a 42 Carver and no one has money to play right now. I have never made money on boating; Owned Chris Crafts, 27 & 30 Sea Rays, Century, Glastron. Not a good time to sell.

Cobras are for fun. If you make money great! Enjoy while you have it or them...

Is it me or do I see more people looking at these cars in discust.
"Dam loud Cars"
"What is wrong with that man"
"Doesn't that man know gas is too high for such things"
"That man probably is going to vote for McCain!"
