Mikey, I think it's an easier exercise if the car is done and you drive it to the tag agency. You insure it, use your regular driver plate to get it there, and simply present an invoice for the value of the completed car, with the MCO. When I registered my Unique they wanted to see the car, check the odometer, and see the manufacturer's chassis number on the frame. Rick (my home email is rdurkin@comcast.net)

Gentlemen,

I just got off the phone with the Florida Dept. of Rev.

Here is what I have gathered so far.

If you paid sales tax on the kit itself you do not have to pay taxes upon registration.

If you made any purchase over the internet for parts those items will be taxed when you register the car, if submitted.

Only major componet receipts such as engines, transmission, Cobra "kit" should be submitted.

If the "Kit" receipt is broken down into detailing individual items within the kit, this will help justify the majority of the major parts.

I hope this helps.

Well hopefully my final update except to say it's done!

At lunch today I got a call from the regional office of the DMV. They lady told me they would allow my request for a replica title but were going to be redefining the requirements. She said they would have a grace period to get them done and then no more without meeting the new requirements.

She gave me no particulars of time frame or additional requirements for this to occur. She did say they would probably require a weight slip and motor receipt.

I would suggest if you want a replica title you should apply now. You can always get the registration later.

Yes, I wanted to get the title out of the way and the car is not ready for the road yet. You have to check a box that says you will not operate on the highway until it is properly registered. This way I don't have the expense of insurance or tags until I need them.

Good Luck

I called my local Title company and they said it takes 5 min and it will be titled as a 1965 Cobra.

I will head down there tomorrow.

Thanks for the info on the TL-48 (missed that one) I had all this stuff ready for title but I'll go that route instead.

The more I look through this stuff, the larger the "grey area" gets. None of these procedures is really dead on.

I don't really care what year it's titled under as things are, but down the road emissions testing may come back and it would be nice to avoid that headache.

As far as the taxes and fees make sure you pay what you're supposed to as you don't want to get hit with the huge fines and interest down the road. The state tax authorities will hit you as hard (or harder) than the IRS, not to mention the DMV getting involved and your license, reg and title getting suspended.

Quick update on my title. The state has relented and will allow me to title as a replica. The only thing additional I had to provide was a weight slip. They are processing it today.
