First I ask them "What do you mean?" - 99.9/100 they don't know what they're asking.
Then, I tell them it would basically be mathmatically impossible since their were only about 30 S/C's made and they're all in high-end collections.
To me, the problem isn't what I drive. The problem is in the question/questioner. yes, I get tired of answering it, but the ones that think it's real make up for it.
And, no. You're uncle didn't own one.
What was the question again?

The two questions I get most often are:
"Is it a kit car?" My answer is that it is a fake Cobra that is made in a factory.
"Is it real?" I know what is being asked is not whether it is a car that a lawyer could interpret as "real" because it has some connection with Ol' Shel at some point in time. What is being asked is whether it is a vintage car made back in the day. My answer is as honest as I can make it: "No, it's a fake." Any other answer is deceptive to some degree.
Owning and driving my fake Cobra is all the gratification I need. I don't need to make myself feel better by trying to make my fake something that it isn't. As far as I'm concerned, there are only two categories: vintage Cobras and Cobras that aren't vintage. All vintage Cobras are fabulous. Not all non-vintage Cobras are created equal. Some are more fabulous than others. But that doesn't mean that they aren't all in the same category.

I know what the average Joe is asking when they ask is it "real" and I give them the correct answer. My answer as to my Cobra is "Yes it is real. Its a Continuation series Shelby Cobra." It may not be what they expected to hear, wanted to hear or understand but its the correct answer. If they have questions I answer them.
You may not like my answer but that doesn't change the current state of the facts or make my answer incorrect. Does it??? There are a sea of guys like you with non Shelbys and even original owners who would love Continuation Series owners to think of our cars as "kits", "replicas" or otherwise not real or genuine Cobras for selfish reasons.
Cry about it. It ain't happening.
You're right. SAAC uses the word "genuine". Excuse me. Please enlighten me on the difference in the words genuine and real or the difference as used by SAAC. So I guess when SAAC also stated on their website as to their position on the Continuation series they see no difference in the originals and the continuation series other then the time frame they were built i bet you don't get that either???
Please. Give it a rest.
Go read the SAAC website and their position on the Continuation Series.
And..as a matter of fact "Mr. Celby" not only am I 100% dead on when I say my Cobra is a real Cobra when asked, as backed by SAAC...You are in fact the one who is really misrepresenting your car when you call it or refer to it as a "Cobra" because unless its a Shelby new or old, its not. Period. You need to refer to your car not as a Cobra but a "Cobra look a like" otherwise you are not being truthful and you are misleading the average Joe.
Enjoy.
|
At BEST, your answer is misleading. They are asking if your car is one of the originals, NOT if it was built by Shelby recently. THAT makes your answer incorrect.
Read my post again. I wrote that "...genuine Shelby", and I agree with that statement, along with the sea of guys like me with non Shelbys and original owners.
SAAC did NOT use the word "REAL", correct? Which, AGAIN, makes your statement to "Joe" false.
I do refer to my 'Cobra' as a fiberglass replica Cobra, and that takes even MORE wind out of your sails.
People just want to know if your Cobra is one of the originals, and any amount of lawyer-ese "spin" on your answer makes your answer wrong.
I am enjoying my Cobra...66,326 miles so far. Thank you for caring.

Just as an exercise, I looked up "replica" in a Websters dictionary. Here is what is says: "a reproduction or copy, as of a picture or statue, especially by the maker of the original." Let's see, if you look at Shelby as a maker of the original 1960's vintage Cobra, and he decides many years later to start making copies of those cars, well... I'm not going to draw any conclusions here, just making an observation.
Fire when ready.

Now, this thread is really what clubcobra is about.
In the beginning, people would ask me if was real or not. I tried to briefly explain my car, but I never really thought they understood. Most car lookers understand either a kit-car/replica vs original, and not all the grey areas in between. After the initial couple times, I now answer, no, it's a kit car. Saves me lip service trying to explain. Sometimes they ask "who's the manufacturer", and after I respond "Shelby", they look confused, and then I go into the explanation. Now and then, more knowledgable people recognize my car as one of the "new" cobra's, and I have considerable conversations about cobra's, replica's, etc, but that is not the norm.
Now, whenever I'm at a gas station, store, etc, and people ask me "if it's real", I always answer NO, it's a fake, and usually that's the end of the conversation.
I know what my car is, and is not.
I think of the "true" kit-car, as a home built car, attatching a new style body either to an existing chassis, or a fabricated one, and then using common auto chassis parts, not original to the car that is being replicated. Kind of like a Hodge-Podge car. Obviously, many of the cobra kit-cars are way beyond this. Whether you consider cobra replicas kit-cars are up to you. I tell people my car is a kit-car and/or replica, and sometimes they then tell me "no it isn't, you have the real thing". Fine with me. Like I said before, I know what my car is, and what it isn't.

I didn't start this thread to pit one against the other. Just looking for info/opinions on some registration issues in NJ.
I am not driving a "real" one and all I can say is that everytime I get behind the wheel of my "replica" it puts a smile on my face. It turns alot of heads. and when it finally comes to rest and the crowd approaches, more are saying, "wow that is a sharp car" and less are saying "what is it"?
Enjoy the ride and appreciate what you have particularly if you where able to build one yourself.

Is it Real...
Whenever I have bought a new car it had to be registered, licensed and inspected before it left the lot. (Test A)
When you build a kit car you have to do things a little differently. (Test B)
So did you buy a new car or did you have to do things a little differently.
It's a real, new, Shelby, but the question is what exactly is it. A or B.
