Got the bug, kinda of a morph, but on target as it relates to the question the thread asks.

A Shelby MSO indicating 1965 is correct and logical, that IS the 'model' of the car in question. Many states, including Hawaii, recognize that is an appropriate way to list the car as to what it is. Year of BUILD or 'First Sold' is another matter, thats where you have to be careful to avoid a fraud issue. While my Hawaii title says MODEL: "1965 Cobra" it also notes the car is a 'Street Rod', Hawaii's way of saying 'SPCN'.

Geez, won't this thread ever die? Now we are rehashing what's already been posted.

Once again... the Shelby MSO reads: "Model year - 1965". It also lists the DATE the MSO was written, and then states that this is the first transfer of this component vehicle into ordinary trade and commerce.

So nobody is fooling the DMV with the 1965 thing.

I used to have a NAF 427 AC Cobra and titled it as a 1966 because the insurance premiums in Arizona were much lower than titled as a 1990. I would do the same thing if I got another replica of any other marque.

I've got another year before the boy is in college, once that happens we'll be thinking really hard about moving down in a southern direction....Not sure where just yet, but we'll start looking late next year. Any recommendations as to web sites and such?

Correct, but the official VIN is the number issued by the state. This number is on a metal tag and it is riveted on the frame just like a regular VIN plate on any vehicle. The state could care less what the vehicle number is.

There's now rhyme or reason in CA though. Some CHP offices assign a new VIN and rivet a plate to the frame, while others use the chassis number assigned by the manufacturer (the latter is common with SPF owners in the South SF Bay area)

It is clear the final solution here is for everyone with a pre-68 car sold in the US to throw away those ridiculous little snake emblems and attach a proper AC badge. The Euro-version will already have them. When someone then asks if it is "REAL" you can then say "Yes, it is an AC Cobra." As it should be. If you want to call it a Shelby AC Cobra, get ol' Shel to sign the glovebox.

Is a continuation car a REAL Shelby Cobra? You bet...no question.
Is a continuation car a REAL AC Cobra (the one worth all the money). No way.

And what people are REALLY asking when they ask if its real is..."Is this the one worth all the money?" What you call your car and how you answer questions about its pedigree, in the end, all comes down to money. The price of admission to the lucky club that can answer the generic "Is it REAL" question in a truthful manner, is pretty steep. I really don't care what SAAC says and what they include or don't include in a registry. The determining factor regarding "Is it REAL" can be found on the auction block, where money changes hands. That is the "Is it REAL" judge and jury.

Didn't AC engineer and make lovely cars? And weren't those 1960's vintage Ford engines spectacular? And those Shelby Amercian employees that so professionally bolted in those Ford engines and then took a brass hammer and threw the pin drives on....hmmm. And then there was the Racing Team with some spectacular drivers. And that's where the buck stops. As for CS, my opinion is he has found his niche signing glove boxes

I think there may have been multiple instances when cars have been misrepresented on the auction block to fetch more money, I think mainly the owner misrepresenting the car to the auction company.

Actually the 427 chassis was designed by ford, I believe the first automotive chassis designed on a computer.

I'm an outsider that loves Cobras and have found threads on this forum going back to 1999 over what is a "real" Cobra. WTF? You've been fighting over this for more than a decade? FWIW, If someone asks if it's "real", they mean whether it was manufactured pre-1968. A "continuation" Cobra is certainly a "real" Shelby by definition, it has an MSO to prove it, but that's not what the rest of us great unwashed mean by "real." We mean is it an "original" pre-1968 car. Calling a CSX 4000 car a "real" Cobra is a game of semantics. Sure, it's "real". But if you use a Shelby MSO definition as a basis for "real", that means the fiberglass bodied 4000 series cars qualify as "real" Cobras. As much as I respect a glass bodied 4000 series car, it's not what most of us "Joe six-pack" guys refer to as a "real" Cobra. Please just stop this crap. Whatever Cobra "original", continuation," "replica," or "kit" you own is one of the baddest cars to crawl the highways. Lighten up, Francis.
