Mufflers for Side Pipe

Hello All,

I currently have Lobak muffler which came with my replica. I have a set of side pipes with out mufflers and was wondering what you guy recommend for a muffler. I was thinking of welding up my own muffler in its place.

My Lobak mufflers seem alittle quiet for my 427 BB.

What muffler is best for these Cobras or should I just stay with what I have?

Any recommendations?

Turbo tones from stainless specialties. http://www.stainless-specialties.com/products2a.htm I don't like the pipes to be too loud, but then again, I don't like them too quiet either. They have to be jussstttt right....

Do they only make them in stainless.

If so I would have to get the hole setup. My collector is not stainless.

Summit and Jegs both sell mufflers to replace the muffler sections of your sidepipes. You can probably also find them at just about any exhaust shop.
Summit also sells muffler inserts that can be replaced if your muffler section is in good shape. Of course, either way you have to cut the muffler section out and reweld either the existing or a new muffler back in place.

Mine are not stainless, although I did have them powder coated. Give them a call and they'll probably make just about anything you want.

I know several folks who have popped 40 hp out of their Superformance using a Howe Racing collector and muffler. Not sure of the muffler model #, but jwoodard on the boards here has them.
They're 20% or so louder, but not ridiculous.

I see they have a 2 1/2" flow path.. That's can cap horse power a little, depending on your engine's output. The trouble is when you step up to 3" the noise goes up dramatically. It's all a trade-off. I'm running a Classic Chambered set with a 3" flowpath. Minimal HP loss but loud as hell.

I just installed a set of 3" ID Stainless Specialties mufflers on my friends FE powered SPF. They can be welded in using a stainless wire and ceramic coat just as well. Some good discussion on it here showing the baseball rolling through.Side Pipes

Your Lobaks have a 7/8" center core surrounded by the augers. You can upgrade those to a larger 1.5" center core Race Lobaks which flow way more air and use a different auger design. Also, the Lobaks are usually built with 6 augers...you can request only four augers which is what I have. My Race Lobaks idle close in sound to my old 7/8" Lobaks but bark really loud when you jump on them. Don't know the size of your headers , peak RPM or power but the Race Lobaks may be a good match for your BB.

Are you sure that the Lobak mufflers are 7/8 inch.

No wounder why my car is so quiet.

I was thinking of ordering the Dynomax Bullet mufflers. I have heard that those work pretty well.

I think I will order the Cobrapak with the turn downs.

I was thinking of the Dynamax Bullets but these seem to be larger and flow more.

I still cant believe my side pipes are 7/8

What were they thinking????????????

Yup....standard Lobaks have a 7/8" center core with the rest of the pipe flowing thru the augers. The larger 1.5" center core Race Lobaks flow more by design . I had 3" Dynomax 24" L Bullets welded in and cut them off with a Sawzall a week later after ordering the Race Lobaks. The Dynomax Race Bullets were assaulting my senses at every rpm and were unbearably loud for me anyway in the higher end ranges !

I use the Dynomax bullets with the 3" ID on my 540 cid that makes 540 rwhp. They are not any louder than the other BB cobras in Phoenix, until I pass 4000 rpm, then it just screams. I had a high compression (12.75:1) engine before; it was louder at idle - crackled... This new engine is 10.5:1 and runs on pump gas and the sound is more mellow. The exhaust sound level is not just a function of the muffler, but also compression and cam overlap.
